Here’s what actually works in CHQ:

Mulch first, always. Two to three inches of mulch around your plants blocks light from reaching w**d seeds. No light, no germination. This is your single most effective weapon.

Preen after planting. Apply a pre-emergent like Preen right after you mulch. It stops new w**d seeds from sprouting — it won’t kill what’s already there, but it keeps the next round from coming up.

Pull what’s there before it seeds. One w**d that goes to seed becomes hundreds next year. Pull it now while it’s small.

You can’t outwork w**ds. But you can outsmart them.

Wilting in June doesn’t always mean dry soil. In most cases we see here in CHQ, it means the opposite — roots sitting in too much water, suffocating underground.

Here’s how to tell the difference:

Overwatered: soil is wet or soggy, lower leaves yellow, plant looks heavy and droopy
Underwatered: soil is bone dry, leaves feel crispy, wilting happens midday in heat

Before you water again — stick your finger 2 inches into the soil. If it’s still moist, put the hose down.

Most plants in Western NY do better with deep, infrequent watering than daily light watering. Let the soil dry slightly between sessions.

Here’s something the experienced gardeners in this county have known for years:
You can divide your existing perennials to multiply your planting.

Hostas. Coneflowers. Daylilies. Black-eyed Susans. 🌻

Many perennials benefit from being divided every 2–4 years — they grow fuller, perform better, and you get free plants for the rest of your beds.

How to do it:
→ Wait until early spring or fall when plants are not actively blooming
→ Dig up the clump and gently separate the root mass into sections
→ Replant at the same depth — don’t bury the crown
→ Water in well and top with mulch

You can fill an entire new bed from one mature plant. 🌱
