Happy Solstice and Merry Winter Tidings to you and yours ❤️

With this changing of the season, we too are changing. Our sweet little business, that has given us so much over the years, is also entering a new season. Both partners and creators of this business are very busy mamas and we have our hands in many baskets. So we have decided that we will be taking a step back as a business, and dear Jes Houston, my buddy and best biz pal, will be stepping away from her role with Take Root Remedies. Although she will always still be a part of it.
Thanks Jes for 8 years of herbal adventurism, creating recipes, long hours on the computer, packing boxes, vending the markets, and so much more. I’m so thankful for all that we have learned, the time we got to spend together, and all the sharing of our continued herbal education journey which has brought so much to my life❤️ maybe now we can hang out and not talk about work ! 😘

I plan to restructure the business and keep it alive on a small scale. What this means for the business is that Take Root Remedies is no longer is available through a website and won’t be at any markets this season or in the foreseeable future.

Luckily! …. A limited variety of products are available locally at the Rome Store ( Rome Bakery and Market )
and I hope to be in a few more local shops soon.

If you are not local and would like to order something please email [email protected]
I’ll keep you all posted on the changes coming in the new year. Perhaps you know of a lovely little shop that would like to carry some all natural, hand crafted, artisanal, herbal body care products. If so please do share.
I wish you all well in these dark winter days as we await the light and the new possibilities that shall come with the new year. ❤️🙏❤️🌲

Autumn and its time to cut back the woody perennials. Thyme, Rosemary, Wormwood, Lavender, and this, Hyssop, all get a haircut. The best approach is to cut just above the woody stem from last year. Shape the plant by cutting hard at the base and rounding out more gently at the crown, making as close to a hemisphere as possible. If you have lots of time, strength, and not many plants, hand tools are just great. If you have lots of plants, a power hedge trimmer will save you a case of tendonitis. Here I've walked up the row and done half the job on the plants to the right. Then, I'll walk back down and finish them off. This video will demonstrate https://www.youtube.com/shorts/nfXLx9oY8DA

This one goes out the ones who made potions in their backyard out of mud and leaves and pine sap.
💚
Pine trees have so many wonderful uses as food & medicine for humans- You can make flour from their inner bark, clear congestion soothe sore throats & support your immune system with their needles, balance hormones and combat allergies with pollen, and so much more.

This beautiful golden resin can be brought home and processed into an antibacterial, skin healing and protecting salve, but can also be used straight from the tree as a backwoods Band-Aid, or to help draw out a splinter, glass, or insect stingers & toxins.

Also it smells AMAZING, which is a nice bonus for something you are rubbing on your skin.

If you’ve ever been tempted to touch it, you know this stuff is super sticky. As we were collecting it, Juniper kept finding trapped bugs and saying “it’s like the tar pits!” So I recommend using jars and scraping tools that you are OK dedicating to this activity from now on. (And try to keep your hands clean the best you can, we are still getting sap off of door k***s, faucet handles, and clothes, but 10-year olds sometime have different gathering methods than most adults….)

Recipe in comments!

As always, make sure you are 100% sure about ID, safety, and sustainable harvesting practices before gathering or consuming any wild plants & fungi.
