How Interacting with Horses Enhances Human Well-Being

🦄Encouraging Trust Through Nonverbal Communication🦄
Horses are highly sensitive to human body language and emotions, meaning they respond to calm and consistent behavior. This interaction teaches individuals how to regulate their energy and convey trust without words.

🦄Grounding Through Physical Interaction🦄
Grooming or simply spending time in close proximity to a horse can have grounding effects. The rhythmic patterns of grooming strokes or the warmth of their presence often have a meditative quality, helping people reconnect with their inner calm.

🦄Increase Balance & Coordination🦄
Not only do you have to keep yourself balanced on the horse while riding, but you are also practicing coordination as you direct the horse in different directions. The rider must coordinate their movements with the horse, developing spatial awareness and adjusting posture and position as needed. Using arms, legs, and seat simultaneously to direct the horse and navigate obstacles.

🦄Promoting Emotional Awareness🦄
Horses mirror the emotions of those around them, serving as a non-judgmental reflection of someone’s inner state. This mirroring encourages individuals to acknowledge and process their feelings in a supportive, gentle way.

You can support these benefits, and many more, by supporting our herd of incredibly special horses during our Pledges for Ponies campaign.

🦄What does it take to care for our herd of unicorns?🦄

Our horses are the heart, soul, and literal backbone of our program! They need constant care to provide life-changing lessons to NWTRC participants.

What does it take to provide this level of care?
Care every single day of the year (yes, even on holidays). Our herd is fed high-quality hay 3 times per day. Stalls, paddocks, and waters are cleaned daily. Each horse has an individual turnout and exercise plan, along with being handled and groomed daily. NWTRC horses receive ongoing training and exercise, both on the ground and in the saddle. We keep their lives interesting and varied by taking them to clinics and shows. They receive hoof care every 6-8 weeks, and equine chiropractic and massage treatments throughout the year. They have annual preventative veterinary care, and more as needed. A number of our horses need special supplements and medications to keep them healthy and performing at their very best.

All of this adds up; caring for our herd is one of our largest expenses. But, it is worth every penny for the opportunities they open up and the memories they help create for children and adults with disabilities!

Is it worth it? YES!

”After riding at the center, my daughter’s teacher and therapist commented on how she is more verbal, calm and balanced. We love this place!” -NWTRC parent

Your contribution helps to cover the multitude of expenses associated with upkeep, feed, supplements, training, vet, and hoof care.
