Today was Friday again—our weekly outreach in downtown Bellingham.

For many years, we have walked these same streets, meeting people who are struggling to survive. No matter how long we do this work, some scenes never become easier to witness.

We meet people who tell us they have not eaten for a day or even two days. We see the same individuals wearing the same clothes week after week because they have nothing else to change into. Shoes are often worn through, with holes in the soles or barely holding together.

Thankfully, some are able to make it to our Sunday Popup Potluck, where they can receive food, clothing, shoes, blankets, and other basic necessities. But some cannot. Some are too sick, some have disabilities, and others are simply trying to make it through another difficult day.

We, sometimes, meet people who are seriously ill and facing significant barriers to getting the help they need. Some are unsure where to seek assistance. Others struggle to afford basic necessities, including over-the-counter pain medication, while many are overwhelmed by the challenges they face every day.

We see people wandering downtown with nowhere to go and nowhere they truly feel safe. We see people sleeping beside garbage bins because they have nowhere else to rest. Behind every tent, every backpack, and every sleeping bag is a human being with a story, a struggle, and a life that matters.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking sight is seeing young adults living on the streets year after year. It is especially difficult to see young women trying to survive in such vulnerable circumstances. Every day and night, they face risks and challenges that most of us can hardly imagine.

Today, we met a very young man living with a neurological movement disorder. We stopped to talk with him and offer help. He struggled to communicate and had difficulty speaking, but he accepted some food and clothing. After a few quiet moments, he simply walked away.

As we watched him leave, our hearts were heavy.

It is difficult to see someone so young facing such enormous challenges. Every person we meet reminds us that homelessness is not just about lacking housing. It is about loneliness, illness, hunger, uncertainty, and the daily struggle to survive.

Sometimes all we can offer is a meal, a warm jacket, a pair of socks, or a few moments of kindness. We know these things cannot solve every problem. But they can remind someone that they are seen, that they matter, and that they have not been forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who supports Love2Hope. Your donations, volunteer hours, and words of encouragement make this outreach possible. Because of you, we are able to bring food, clothing, hope, and compassion to our unhoused neighbors each week.

Please keep those who are struggling in your thoughts. A simple act of kindness can make a world of difference to someone who feels invisible.

For more than 16 years, Love2Hope has been dedicated to helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community—unhoused individuals and their beloved companion animals. Many of the people we serve have little or no financial means to seek veterinary care when their pets become sick. In many cases, their pets have never received vaccinations and are at risk of suffering from preventable and potentially deadly diseases.

At Love2Hope, we believe that no animal should suffer simply because its owner cannot afford veterinary care. Over the years, we have helped many unhoused pet owners access essential veterinary services, including vaccinations and treatment for illnesses and injuries. Our goal is to help keep these cherished companions healthy and to prevent unnecessary suffering whenever possible.

One story that will always remain in our hearts is that of a young German Shepherd puppy named Zeus. Zeus belonged to an unhoused individual who loved him dearly. One day, Zeus became seriously ill. He stopped eating and drinking and was vomiting repeatedly.

When Zeus's owner reached out to Love2Hope for help, we knew he needed veterinary attention as soon as possible. We immediately transported Zeus to Bellingham Veterinary Clinic, where Dr. Sullivan examined him and ordered diagnostic testing. Because Zeus had never received vaccinations, there was concern that he might have contracted parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease.

As a precaution, Zeus and his owner remained outside while the clinic performed the necessary testing. The results confirmed that Zeus had parvovirus. Dr. Sullivan promptly began treatment and prescribed medication to help Zeus recover.

Thankfully, Zeus began showing signs of improvement shortly after starting treatment. Day by day, he grew stronger.

Today, Zeus is healthy, happy, and thriving.

His owner remains deeply grateful for the care and kindness shown during one of the most frightening moments of his life.

Stories like Zeus's remind us why our work matters. They remind us that compassion can change lives—both human and animal. We would like to sincerely thank Dr. Sullivan and Bellingham Veterinary Clinic for the care they provided to Zeus and for the kindness they have shown to many unhoused pet owners and their animals through our experience at Love2Hope. We are grateful for the compassion shown to pets in need and for the difference that care can make in the lives of vulnerable animals and the people who love them.

Love2Hope was founded in May 2024, but my commitment to helping unhoused individuals and their companion pets began many years before that. For more than 14 years, I have used my own modest savings to help people and animals in need when no other help was available.

Throughout those years, I helped many unhoused individuals, both with and without pets. I also assisted pet owners in obtaining veterinary care when they had no financial resources to do so.

One story I will never forget is about an unhoused dog named Zena.

One afternoon, I received an urgent call from a shelter case manager asking if I could help. Zena, an eight-year-old mixed-breed dog, had been suffering from a severe ear condition for weeks. When I saw her, I was shocked. Her right ear was so swollen that it had grown nearly the size of her head.

It was heartbreaking to see. Zena appeared to be in significant pain, and her owner was unable to afford veterinary treatment. At the time, I also did not have the funds needed to pay for the care she required.

I contacted Dr. Edmund Sullivan at Bellingham Veterinary Clinic and explained the situation. He agreed to examine Zena.

After evaluating her condition, Dr. Sullivan determined that she had developed an ear hematoma that required surgery. He performed the procedure, and Zena recovered well afterward. She was able to continue living with her owner in much greater comfort.

I am grateful that Zena was able to receive the care she needed and that her suffering was relieved. Her story has remained with me over the years and is one of many experiences that reinforced the importance of ensuring that unhoused individuals and their pets have access to veterinary care when they need it.

Today, through Love2Hope, we continue working to help unhoused individuals and their companion pets throughout Whatcom County.

LOVE2HOPE STANDS WITH DR. SULLIVAN & BELLINGHAM VETERINARY 🐾

Recent allegations involving Dr. Sullivan and Bellingham Veterinary Clinic have generated concern within our community. Through our work with unhoused individuals, very low-income families, and their companion pets, we have witnessed the positive impact Dr. Sullivan and his team have had on countless animals and the people who love them.

❤️ They have helped countless unhoused individuals and low-income families keep their beloved pets healthy and safe.

❤️ Dr. Sullivan has worked with pet owners facing financial hardship and has helped make veterinary care more accessible for those who had few other options.

❤️ He has answered after-hours calls, accommodated emergencies, and stepped in when other options were unavailable.

❤️ Time and time again, we have witnessed Dr. Sullivan make extraordinary efforts to ensure animals receive the care they need, even when financial circumstances created significant challenges.

We have seen animals receive care when their owners had nowhere else to turn. We have seen families stay together with their beloved pets because affordable treatment was available. We have seen compassion extended to people facing some of the most difficult circumstances of their lives.

Standing with Dr Sullivan, Bellingham Veterinary Clinic

At Love2Hope, we have worked alongside unhoused and very low-income individuals and their companion pets throughout Whatcom County for many years. During that time, we have helped hundreds of pet owners access veterinary care, and many of those animals received treatment from Dr. Sullivan.

Through our firsthand experience, we have seen Dr. Sullivan provide care to animals whose owners had little or no ability to pay. He has offered discounted services, accepted payment arrangements, and helped countless pets who might otherwise have gone without treatment. His focus has consistently been on the health and well-being of the animals in his care.

Throughout our years of working with Dr. Sullivan, we have never witnessed him intentionally place an animal at risk or act without concern for an animal's welfare. His compassion, dedication, and willingness to help vulnerable pet owners have made a meaningful difference in our community.

Many unhoused and low-income pet owners rely on Dr. Sullivan because he has been willing to provide care when few other options were available. The loss of his services would have a significant impact on vulnerable individuals, their pets, rescue organizations, and nonprofits such as Love2Hope.

We share this statement based on our direct experiences and observations. In our opinion, Dr. Sullivan has been an important resource for animals and pet owners in our community, and his years of service have benefited countless pets and families.

Today was a very hot day, and we are so grateful to our amazing volunteers who prepared cold bottles of water and refreshing iced sweet tea to help our unhoused neighbors stay hydrated under the summer sun.

Many people assume that because it is summer, blankets and jackets are no longer needed. The reality is very different. During today's outreach, we brought three large bags of jackets, two boxes of shoes, and two bags of blankets. Every single item was gone within a short time.

Why? Because when the sun goes down, the temperature drops quickly. Nights can be cold and unforgiving when you are sleeping outside. A blanket is not just a blanket—it is warmth, comfort, and protection. A jacket is not just clothing—it can mean making it through another cold night.

Shoes are desperately needed as well. Many of our unhoused friends walk everywhere they go. Their shoes are often worn out, torn apart, or barely holding together. A good pair of shoes protects their feet from injury, infection, and the harsh reality of living outdoors.

Tarps are another essential item. For many, a tarp becomes a mattress, a barrier between their bodies and the cold, hard ground. Without one, they may search for a large piece of cardboard to sleep on—if they are fortunate enough to find one.

It is difficult for most of us to imagine living outside 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Yet we know many unhoused friends who have endured this reality for more than ten years and still have not found a path to stable housing or meaningful assistance. Some survive on little more than a small amount of food assistance each month. We have heard heartbreaking stories from people who had not eaten for one or even two days before seeing us.

That is why we continue our Sunday Popup Potluck and Friday Outreach. We want our unhoused neighbors to know that we are here to help them and their pets with food, clothing, and basic necessities. While we cannot solve every problem, we hope our support can ease some of their daily struggles and remind them that they are not forgotten.

At Love2Hope, we believe every person deserves dignity, kindness, and respect. Our guiding principles are simple:

❤️ Helping with a smile.
❤️ Helping with a sincere heart.
❤️ Helping without judgment.

We are incredibly blessed to have volunteers who embody these values every single week. Rain or shine, they show up with compassion, generosity, and love. They carry heavy supplies, serve meals, listen to stories, and offer hope to those who need it most.

Today, we want to give our volunteers a huge round of applause. Their kindness is changing lives in ways that cannot always be measured.

And to our supporters, donors, and community members—thank you. Your encouragement, donations, and belief in our mission make all of this possible. Every blanket, every pair of shoes, every meal, and every act of kindness comes from people like you.

What a blessing! ❤️

Time really flies. It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through 2026, and that Love2Hope has been doing outreach for more than a year.

Every Friday, you can find us pulling our three wagon carts through downtown, loaded with food, supplies, and pet necessities. What once felt new has now become a familiar sight. People often stop us to ask what we are doing, and we are always happy to share our mission with anyone who has not heard about Love2Hope before.

One of our wonderful volunteers actually met us that way. One Friday afternoon, she stopped us and asked about our mission. She loved the idea of helping unhoused neighbors and their companion pets. Since then, she has joined us almost every Friday, helping hand out food and supplies. Sometimes she even purchases much-needed items like sleeping bags and tarps. We are so grateful for her kindness and for being part of our amazing team.

Today was a beautiful day, so we walked farther down to the creek than usual. Many of our unhoused neighbors were there enjoying the sunshine, sitting or lying on the grass and taking advantage of the nice weather. As always, our bags of snacks were a big hit.

It was a busy day. After outreach, we headed straight to the veterinary clinic to help a tiny kitten that had been rescued by one of our unhoused friends in the woods two days ago.

This little boy is only about two weeks old. He was so tiny that his whole body could fit in one adult hand. His face was covered in dirt, his eyes and nose were running, and his little belly was swollen from parasites. The man who rescued him cared deeply about him but simply did not have the money to take him to a veterinarian. He called us yesterday and asked if we could help.

When we heard about the kitten's condition, we knew we couldn't wait.

Today, we brought him to the veterinarian, where he will stay overnight for monitoring and treatment. We are hoping this little guy has a long and healthy life ahead of him.

A huge thank you to the team at Bellingham Veterinary Clinic for caring for this tiny kitten and giving him the chance he deserves.

This work is not always easy. There are challenges almost every day. But moments like these remind us why we do it. Seeing an unhoused person receive support, seeing a hungry pet get food, or seeing a sick kitten finally get medical care makes every challenge worthwhile.

We feel incredibly blessed to be able to help both people and animals. Thank you to everyone who walks this journey with us and helps make this mission possible.

One of the saddest parts of what we do at Love2Hope is receiving calls from pet owners whose puppies or kittens are very sick, only to find out that it is too late.

This week, we received several calls asking for help for critically ill puppies and kittens. Yesterday alone, two puppies died in their owners' arms before help could reach them. Watching a young life slip away from a disease that may have been prevented is absolutely heartbreaking.

This is why we always talk about the importance of vaccinations. Vaccines protect pets from serious diseases such as parvovirus, distemper, and rabies in dogs, and FVRCP and rabies in cats. These diseases can cause tremendous suffering and, in many cases, death.

Parvovirus is especially devastating. A puppy can appear healthy one day and become critically ill just days later. Once symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea begin, the disease can progress very quickly. The first few days are often the most dangerous, and without treatment, many puppies do not survive.

At Love2Hope, we work very hard to help unhoused and very low-income pet owners get their pets vaccinated. We schedule veterinary appointments and often cover the cost of vaccines and veterinary care. Unfortunately, there are times when appointments are missed or owners do not respond to our calls. Later, we hear from them again when their pets have become seriously ill.

That is always difficult because we know that many of these situations could have been prevented.

Please, if you have a puppy or kitten, do not wait. Vaccinations are one of the most important things you can do to protect them. They rely on us to keep them safe and healthy.

Love2Hope will be hosting our 3rd Free Pet Vaccination Clinic in July. We will share more details next week.
