Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning commandment. On Maundy Thursday, Jesus gave a new command to his disciples: “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34–35).

Instead of distinguishing between loving one another and witnessing to unbelievers, Jesus tells his disciples that their love for one another is their witness to an unbelieving world.
