‘Get them all’: Why are WA farmers blindsided by an ICE crackdown? 04/25/2026

Conservative Whatcom County farmers are now realizing some of the consequences of the MAGA immigration policy.

I’m angry that people who should have known better helped enable Trump and his republican cronies and the real harm they are doing. But it’s a hard thing to admit that you’ve been lied to and fooled. It takes maturity to admit a mistake.

Trump has lied to and fooled a lot of people. We need them to recognize it and vote differently in the future. Let’s not make it harder to admit by saying “I told you so,” especially not in public forums and on social media.

‘Get them all’: Why are WA farmers blindsided by an ICE crackdown? Farmers are speaking out about immigration raids on farmworkers, saying they're startled by it and disappointed. Are we living in different information bubbles?

Trump is threatening war crimes of horrific proportions. There is no other interpretation of “a whole civilization will die tonight.” This isn’t America. Congress must intervene to stop this madness.

State legislative session wraps up: A review of the the successful bills of the 40th District legislators 03/24/2026

This year I passed a big change to the way that we tax wind and solar farms in Washington state. The new level tax, based on the system size, will be better for rural communities, school districts, etc, that rely on steady revenue. It will also be better for the companies and workers that want to build theses systems and need communities to say yes to building permits. It was a tough negotiation, but in the end we had broad bipartisan support.

War with Iran is needless, thoughtless, and illegal under international law and the US Constitution. Like previous wars of adventure, it will end badly for US interests after costing countless innocent lives, traumatizing communities, and further dividing our country. My heart is broken.

I hope you can join me and Liz Lovelett and Debra Lekanoff at our town hall meetings: in person in Mount Vernon this Saturday, or the following Wednesday evening by phone.

I’ve now watched three videos of federal agents restraining, beating, and shooting Alex Pretti, a 37 year old ICU Nurse in Minnesota. This is horrifying and deeply saddening. The agents responsible must be held to account. But we also have to see that the administration’s violent rhetoric, escalatory tactics, inadequate training, and promised immunity for these agents is just as culpable for this tragedy.

It is clear that ICE and DHS are not making our communities safer. Under the reckless direction of this administration, their actions are deliberately inflaming tension, frightening innocent people, and acting with lawless, and deadly, violence. The killing of Rene Nichole Good by ICE agents and the shooting yesterday in Portland are heartbreaking.

I see no productive role for ICE in my community. We should use every lawful mechanism to hold those responsible to account, and every nonviolent chance to raise our voices in protest.
