Its Christmas in August!!
Or more of a lets-protect-our-apples-from-worms August. This festive meshy aesthetic is a wonderfully organic method of protecting your apple bounties from Washington's notorious apple maggots (Rhagoletis pomonella), which are present and problematic in 22/39 of Washington's counties. We were a little late on the draw(string) this year, and the second photo depicts a few of these wormy casualties. Don't worry if you are also late on the draw though, wormy apples make wonderful snacks for your chickens, ducks, and compost piles.

Don't forget about your spices!
There are so many unused seasoning spices that go out with the cold before they get a chance to make it into those infinite jars you keep saving for a rainy day. Great use for the old gelato tups or the empty seasoning jars in those corners of your top cupboard!
We just did our apple mint for mock/cocktail garnish, sage for all the pastas n fish, and parsley for well, everything. Also a little basil mixer.
π Some hot n dry tips: If you have a food dehydrator, most herbs go nice crisp for 4-6 hours on 110Β°F. Berries and frutas, 130Β°F for 6-8 hours.
If you have an oven that goes that low (you're lucky), that should work too on a convection current.

Hello FB! Those of you who have followed me for a while have probably realized social media is not my forte but this account will now display my business, Bellingham Foodscapes, an ecological landscaping company I started last year. Assuming I remember to post, get ready for some π±π«πΎπ³ππ content.
Iβve always loved ecology which is why I spent a decade trekking through our forests conducting tree & vegetation research. During that time I gained a deep appreciation and understanding of our native flora and its role in our ecosystem. However, after acquiring a dog, a house, chickens, and even a kitten over the last few years, I felt the draw of staying closer to home. Starting in my own yard, I began building a landscape of native and perennial plants, prioritizing food production and pollinator habitat, and the idea for Bellingham Foodscapes was born.
Bellingham Foodscapes is an edible landscaping company focused on designing, implementing, and maintaining functional small-scale ecosystems by utilizing permaculture techniques. The goal is to plant as many edible and native plants as possible while also providing beautiful, aesthetically-pleasing landscapes in our community. Feel free to check out my website (linked in bio), or message me to learn more!
