Pricing jobs at “the going rate” is communism.

It assumes that every company offers the same job quality, the same exact materials, the same buying power, the same level of professionalism, the same set of skills in everyone involved, the same level of customer experience, the same warranty and the same end product.

When all of these things are equal, no single business has any value to add to the project over any other company.

It also assumes that material and labor costs are the same regardless of location, there are no regional influences, no variation in costs of doing business, no influences based on climate or weather conditions, no difference in neighborhoods whether affluent, poor, or middle class.

It also assumes that all clients are the same, all have the same credit and finances for the job, all jobs will add the same value to their respective properties and have the same influence on their lives and families.

No matter how high that rate is, there will always be someone who will do it for less. Less than you, less than the next guy, and less than the guy after that.

When something is offered/sold/performed for less it implies that it has less intrinsic value than the other options.

If you bring less value to your clients, charge less.

If you bring more value to your clients don’t charge “the going rate” for anything you do.
