The Citheronia regalis, commonly known as the regal or royal walnut moth, is native to North America. It holds the title of the largest moth by mass north of Mexico, with a wingspan ranging from 3.75 to 6.1 inches. Its striking caterpillars, called “hickory horned devils,” are the largest in North America.

During their early stages, these caterpillars adopt a nocturnal feeding pattern, resembling bird droppings. As they mature, they develop black-tipped red horns. Female moths lay eggs on nut trees, especially walnuts and hickories.

Despite their fearsome appearance, these creatures are harmless. The regal moth’s captivating nature has influenced scientific studies and cultural tales, including Vladimir Nabokov’s novel “Pale Fire.” 🦋🌿
