The pecan husk are beginning to open and the pecans will be falling very soon. The crop looks very good and we should have a large crop. I planted several Pawnee pecan in February. This variety comes off a few weeks earlier than my other varieties. Pawnee is a high quality nut with grade A fancy with irritation and intense management. Last year I planted several Lakota and Lipan seedlings. Hopefully we will have them producing by 2030.

Burkett shuck split is occurring. This is the earliest variety I have. Mr. Burkett identified and started propagating this variety in the early 1900’s. Has a nutlet similar to a hickory nut and a slight hint of hickory flavor. I have a couple of customers who request this variety for their oatmeal. My other varieties are typically about 21 days till shuck split after Burkett.

I grafted several trees to the variety Lipan in April. By mid May the scion wood was
growing rapidly and current growth is outstanding. The grafted trees have grown a lot of new wood. Botany and plant propagation were valuable courses to attend as undergraduate at ASU and the Pecan Grafting Short Course at Texas A&M demonstrated hand on instruction. Really rewarding skill to practice.
