here are the hikes i fit into one weekend at Mount Rainier 🍂🥾 and honestly, the fall colors were already SO good ~ with even more to come over the next few weeks!!

if you’re planning a fall trip, i’d definitely put the Skyline Trail + Bench and Snow Lake Trail on your list for the foliage. Comet Falls was a little different since there isn’t as much fall color, but the waterfalls make it completely worth it, and it felt noticeably quieter than some of the more popular trails.

this feels like Charlie Swan’s house if Charlie Swan suddenly had an Olson Kundig architect budget and an unconventional art collection. 🦌

Agate Pass Cabin began as a rundown 1938 beach cabin overlooking Agate Passage, eventually becoming architect Alan Maskin’s own 1,100-square-foot retreat 🌲 the original wood was preserved and repurposed throughout the renovation, while the modern additions ~ and that enormous bronze face ~ give it a very different kind of PNW cabin energy.

fun fact: that giant head, called “:)” is a cast-bronze piece by Sutton/Beres/Culler, meant to reference home surveillance. honestly, seems pretty fitting for Charlie’s house. he has a lot to keep an eye on. 🧛🏻‍♂️

i posted this house last year and honestly… i’m not over it ~ so here we are again.

hillside house by HELIOTROPE sits on orcas island, where the rugged landscape has been drawing people in for generations. the home was designed with that landscape in mind, minimizing disturbance to the site and using local materials to create something that feels less like a house dropped into the woods and more like it belongs there. the design in itself is brilliant… but imagine waking up to those views everyday 😩😩 a dream

a midcentury time capsule that truly deserves the title 🎥 designed by architect John R. Gatewood for his own family in 1956, this Southwest Hills home still has its original built-ins, cork floors, period fixtures, Mt. Adams stone fireplace wall, and even a vintage mural in the dining nook. Gatewood lived here for 50 years!! ~ and honestly, if you designed a house this good, wouldn’t you? 🫢

this might be one of the most wonderfully unique homes in portland 🫢 tucked into .71 acres of woods in vista hills, 3210 sw malcolm court is believed to sit on the site of an old way station for travelers along canyon road, !! a route that dates back to the great plank road of the 1850s !!

then, in the 1970s, an architect began transforming the existing structure into this wild pacific northwest composition of wood, glass, stone and unexpected geometry. skylights, floor-to-ceiling windows, rooftop and multiple decks pull the surrounding landscape into the house, while the original stone fireplace quietly remains at the center of it all ~ a pretty incredible collision of portland history and forward-thinking design 🤎 what cool background to an even cooler house

a stunning mcm hidden among redwoods in los angeles? my favorite

designed by mario corbett in 1955, the spalding-idelson house was built around an exceptionally wild site in rustic canyon, with large windows and expressive curved forms that truly blur the lines between inside and out. even better, the home sits alongside rustic creek and was carefully preserved by its later owners 🪵💛 soo earthy and warm

this just-listed judge & jeannie anderson residence, designed by aaron g. green in 1959, sits on nearly 3.5 acres of oceanfront land overlooking the pacific, abalone cove, and catalina island 🛘

a former west coast representative of frank lloyd wright, green designed this residence as an intimate conversation between architecture and its surroundings ~ with terraces, gardens, and walls that shelter rather than separate you from the landscape. it’s truly a breathtaking sight to see 🤯
