A 23-year-old Black woman, Stasy Charles, was killed by her boyfriend, Steven Heinrich, right here in Baton Rouge. Last week I told you how WBRZ’s @besswbrz never questioned District Attorney Hillar Moore or Assistant DA Steve Danielson on why he didn’t ask for a higher bond or a hold on Heinrich. After 500,000+ of you watched and shared that video across platforms, Bess went back and asked Moore the questions we raised. His answer? His office “did not feel it was necessary” to ask Commissioner Kina Kimble for a hold — even though Heinrich had two prior arrests in New York for violating a protective order and was set to be sentenced next month. Moore blamed the commissioner for “low bonds,” while admitting he never made the request in the first place. Here’s what that means: If Moore had asked for a hold, Heinrich would’ve been kept for 72 hours. During that window, New York officials did reach out asking Baton Rouge to hold him so they could pick him up. Instead, he was released — a decision made between law enforcement and the DA’s office. And now, after 16 years as DA, Moore says he’s “learning” to run deeper background checks? Women in Baton Rouge — does that make you feel safer? Hillar Moore is up for reelection next year and being challenged for the first time since 2009. Remember this. I’ll talk more about that later.
