When you know the ending, you often miss the story. Most people's exposure to Stockton Rush was after his death, when the blame was (rightfully) piling up. It's comfortable to have a simple villain to revile, because "obviously, that person was just wrong and I would never do that." Reality is often not that simple, and others have failed but were not under the international media's microscope. Bart Kemper's talk looks at the larger story and identify how OceanGate went from a reputable, if unorthodox, company to the one it is now and why this is relevant to engineering.

Krista Wohlfeil, Bart Kemper, PE, and Alexis San Miguel EI attended the June meeting of the ASME codes and standards for Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy, held at Oceaneering's Ocean Technology facilty in Hanover, Md.

Alexis San Miguel, EI and Univ. of Missouri student intern Allie Brimer take measurements of equipment to be modified.

Getting NASA Artimis mission pins while at the 2026 ASME VVUQ conference

Bart Kemper attended the 2026 ASME VVUQ (Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification) conference, held this year at Vanderbilt University. To put it mildly, he is the uncouth knuckledragger amongst the group. You learn through being challenged. Bart learned a lot, even if he is not sure what it is he learned. He also scored cool mission pins for the ARTEMIS mission from a NASA attendee. #kempereng #kemperengineering #vvuq #simulation #nasa

Krista Kemper with our long-time associate, Edward O'Neill during a business meeting in Dublin, Ireland. Ed and Bart Kemper developed a patent together for municipal solid waste processing and recycling.

Another successful day of field work with Bart Kemper and Leigh Hoppe. Some days it's submarines in exotic locations. Other days its going buildings to look at structures or examine a fire or blast site.
