Today at BRCC’s 2026 Convocation, the TRIO team had the opportunity to share our passion, purpose, and commitment to student success through our presentation:

“From Access to Belonging: Serving the Community College Students with Intention.”

BRCC TRIO Director and Assistant Directors came together to highlight an important message: getting students through the door is only the beginning.

We discussed the barriers students face, the importance of faculty and staff collaboration, and how our collective efforts can help students feel seen, supported, valued, and capable of success.

Yesterday marked the first day of a brand-new school year, and we couldn't be more excited to see our UBI scholars stepping into this next chapter with confidence and determination!

Congratulations to our BRCC Upward Bound Scholars and Bronze ACT Excellence Award winners!
During our 2026 Upward Bound Closing Awards Program, we proudly recognized three scholars who earned ACT scores within the Bronze Excellence range of 20–23:
🏅 Charlee Bryant, Junior at East Feliciana High School — ACT score: 20
🏅 Matthew King, Junior at East Feliciana High School — ACT score: 20
🏅 Dulcia Williams, Senior at McKinley High School — ACT score increased from 19 to 23
These accomplishments reflect their hard work, academic growth, and commitment to preparing for college, careers, and future opportunities. At Upward Bound TRiO Programs at Baton Rouge Community College, being college-bound also means developing the confidence, discipline, communication skills, and work ethic needed to succeed in the workforce and beyond. We are especially proud of Dulcia’s four-point increase!

Congratulations to BRCC Upward Bound II scholar Jakayln Jarrell, recipient of the 2026 Dr. Donald ACT Excellence Award! 🎉

Jakayln, a junior at East Feliciana High School, increased her ACT score from a 22 to a 30 an achievement that reflects her focus, discipline, and determination. She was presented with a $300 cash award, made possible through the generous donations of the UB Administrative Team.

Upward Bound provides free ACT preparation to its scholars. This summer, scholars participated in classes focused on test preparation, utilizing ChalkTalk an ACT platform to strengthen their skills and build confidence.
Jakayln’s new goal is a perfect 36, and she has two years to achieve it! We are TRIO proud of you, Jakayln. Keep pushing, keep believing, and keep showing what is possible! 🌟

Last night, we celebrated the BRCC Upward Bound Senior Class of 2026! 🎓❤️🖤

It was a special evening recognizing our graduating seniors and honoring the hard work, growth, and determination that brought them to this moment. Each scholar has a unique story, and we are proud of the perseverance they have shown along the way.

To our seniors: this is only the beginning. Continue believing in yourselves, stay focused on your goals, and remember that your Upward Bound family will always be cheering you on.

Congratulations to all of our scholars who showed up and showed out in the academic and physical competitions for our annual Battle of the Classes! It was a fun-filled, high-energy, and spirited day from start to finish. This year, the bragging rights belong to the Junior Class — congratulations to the UB Class of 2028! We are also proud to share that TRIO alum Frankie Dunn, a recent graduate of Jackson State University, stopped by to offer words of wisdom and encouragement to our scholars.

Our scholars are ready for two days of academic and athletic challenges, teamwork, class pride, and plenty of friendly competition.

This annual tradition is a special way to close out our summer component while continuing the legacy of the late Dr. Edmond Donald, legendary coach, faculty member, and TRIO alumnus.
