Left undetected, natural gas or fiber cross-bores can pose serious risks, such as expensive property damage, inflow and infiltration (I/I), backups/overflows, damage to your infrastructure, lack of tracer wires, service interruptions to fiber and telecom networks, and even life-threatening gas explosions or leaks.
Cross-bores happen when utilities (like natural gas lines) are unintentionally installed through another underground pipe. Many incidents happen during routine cleaning or plumbing work when equipment hits a line that wasnβt ever identified.
CES locates cross-bores like this one using advanced CCTV inspection and GIS mapping technology that help lower risks and protect the integrity of underground infrastructure. A push camera alone cannot provide full system visibility, and while hydroexcavation is useful, it is not designed to confirm lateral connections or inspect internal pipe conditions.
Proper cross-bore prevention calls for more than a push camera or hydroexcavation. It requires a combination of a few things:
π― Accurate utility locating
π Internal pipeline inspections
π Lateral visibility
πΊοΈ Real-time mapping and documentation

If your stormwater system is showing signs of trouble like standing water, blockages, or odors, it may be time to consider implementing a storm drain triage program.
CES helps municipalities locate, inventory, map, and evaluate storm drain systems so maintenance and repairs can be planned before small issues become expensive problems. We offer a variety of stormwater evaluation services, such as catch basin inspections, CCTV/cleaning, GIS mapping, and flow monitoring (to name a few).
In our latest blog, we dive deeper into catch basin inspections specifically, which are often an integral part of our clients' storm drain triage programs.
Read more about how catch basin inspections work, what you can expect to see in our data reports, and the benefits of understanding your system: https://www.ces-sses.com/signs-your-system-needs-catch-basin-inspection
