As May and graduation approaches, we have to say ‘Farewell’ to our seniors as they go on to their next chapter in life! Gabby, my first student worker, has been part of the team for 2.5 years while Jaycie, Amanda and Avery joined the team just over a year ago. Both Gabby and Jaycie are heading to PA school at LSUHSC in Shreveport to continue their medical careers. Thank you for the hard work and contributions to the team over the years. You will be missed!

Lumbar Medial Branch Blocks:
These are done as a diagnostic tool prior to RFA. 4-8 nerves are often targeted at a time. These are done in usually just a few minutes and are often accomplished with only a single needle stick per side. After experimenting with various techniques, I find this to be the most comfortable for patients.

This procedure gets called a few different names:
-radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
-rhizotomy
-neurotomy
-“nerve burn”
Needles are placed next to the spine, and heat is applied to cause a small lesion of the nerve that innervates certain joints of the spine.

It’s important to tailor treatment to each individual patient. Here we staggered the spinal cord stimulator (SCS) leads from and placed them slightly to the right of midline to cover both chronic low back pain and right leg pain.
SCS actually works at the dorsal column of the spinal cord which is why you may also hear it called “dorsal column stimulator.”
