I’d forgotten just how good Honeyland is until I rewatched it last night. It’s about the last wild beekeeper in Europe. Hatidže Muratova lives in an abandoned village in the mountains of North Macedonia, caring for her elderly mum. She keeps wild bees in crevices in the rock and follows one rule passed down through her family: take half the honey, leave half for the bees. The rule exists for a reason. It keeps the balance between what she needs to live and what keeps the bees alive. Then a nomadic family moves in next door with seven children and 150 cows. The father sees what Hatidže earns from her honey and starts keeping bees himself. He does not follow the rule. But this isn’t a simple story with the family being bad. They are trying to survive in extremely difficult circumstances too, and the film gives them the same patience it gives her. Be prepared, the connection between one of the sons and Hatidže is so sweet, and heartbreaking at the same time. It became the first film in history nominated for both Best Documentary and Best International Feature at the same Oscars.
