We had an amazing turnout at our first Intro to Remote Sensing workshop🌎🛰️!

Thank you to everyone who attended and made this event such a success. And thank you to our amazing students that presented on the applications of remote sensing and photogrammetry in their research!. We were excited to introduce the fundamentals of remote sensing and see so much interest in geospatial science from our panthers.

We also want to thank our sponsors ASPRS Florida Region, for supporting our student chapter and helping make this workshop possible.

Stay tuned for more workshops and events coming soon!

🚀 ASPRS FIU Chapter at Geo Week 2026! 🚀

First time at Geo Week and we showed up strong! 💪

The ASPRS Florida International University Student Chapter proudly attended Geo Week 2026 for the very first time!

From connecting with industry leaders to exploring the latest innovations in LiDAR, remote sensing, and mapping technologies, this experience was truly inspiring for our students.

We are incredibly grateful for the support that made this opportunity possible.

A special thank you to our sponsors:
🔹 ASPRS Florida Region
🔹 FIU CREST ( Center for Aquatic Chemistry and Environment - FIU)
🔹 FIU Institute of Environment

Your support empowers our students to grow professionally, expand their networks, and represent FIU.

We’re coming back with new ideas, new connections, and big goals for our chapter!

We want to extend our gratitude to ASPRS - Florida Region , and FIU Institute of Environment, for their generous funding and support in making the comprehensive drone training at Florida International University possible. This 4-week workshop conducted by Digital E Consulting provided students with valuable hands-on experience in mission planning, flight operations, and data processing for real-world geospatial applications.

This training provided an excellent opportunity for students pursuing research in remote sensing and drone applications, and we hope it will continue to inspire and strengthen the growing drone community at FIU.

Meet the FIU ASPRS Student Chapter 2025-2026 Officers!

Marianna Coppola is a PhD candidate and a Fulbright Scholar focusing on seagrass seascape structure and spatiotemporal dynamics across the Florida Keys and Biscayne Bay. Her research applies remote sensing and photogrammetry techniques to integrate field observation, drone- and satellite-based image data at multiple scales.

Jessika Reyes is a PhD candidate interested in integrating remote sensing, spatial modeling, and ecological analysis to study coastal wetland community dynamics in response to sea-level rise and geomorphological processes.

Carlos Pulido is a PhD candidate focusing on the functional diversity in Everglades plant communities across resource gradients, utilizing a multi-scale approach. He investigates how the functional structure in these communities affects nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration.

Sofia Garcia is a third-year marine biology (BS) major with a passion for ecology and conservation. She has been collaborating on different seagrass mapping projects in Biscayne Bay.

Nicolas R. is a PhD candidate using photogrammetry to assess benthic changes amidst the 2022 Diadema antillarum die-off in Culebra, Puerto
Rico.

Our team is working on offering learning opportunities to the FIU student community, including an in-person drone workshop and training currently ongoing at our BBC marine campus.

Stay tuned for more!

📙 Book Review 📙

📘 The Geography of Hope: Real-Life Stories of Optimists Mapping a Better World

🖋️ David Yarnold. Esri Press: Redlands, CA. 2024. 231 pp. $39.99. ISBN: 9781589487413.

✔️ Reviewed by Matthew Altman, Technical Fellow, ASRC Federal, Anchorage, AK.

The adage, “If you don’t measure it, it doesn’t exist,” has significant meaning when it comes to what gets on a map and what does not. More importantly, the ability to interact with many different datasets in our geographic information systems (GIS) plays a pivotal role in how our democracies work, how our communities receive funding, and what we prioritize for conservation and ecological work. Have you recently reflected on the difference your role in remote sensing, photogrammetry, or GIS makes to your community? If hope is an expression of faith in future improvement, The Geography of Hope invites everyone involved in mapping and remote sensing careers to consider the broad implications that maps, imagery, and geolocated data have to our modern world’s future. Written by former Audubon CEO David Yarnold, each chapter comprises a masterful storytelling experience complete with full color photography about the differences made in community and global settings by passionate people – those he refers to as “Real Life Optimists Mapping a Better World”.
