⚖️ SSDI pays up to $4,152 a month in 2026, while SSI tops out at $994.

The names are one letter apart and the programs work nothing alike.

SSI is a needs-based program funded by general tax revenue, so approval turns on your income and your countable resources, which have to stay under $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple.

SSDI is insurance you already paid for through the Social Security taxes withheld from every paycheck, so savings and investments never reduce the check.

That $4,152 figure is a ceiling, not a typical outcome.

Reaching it takes a long record of maximum taxable earnings, and the average disabled worker benefit in 2026 runs about $1,630 a month.

SSDI also carries a five-month waiting period from your disability onset date, which is why some people receive SSI first and add or switch to SSDI once the decision comes through.

The health coverage splits the same way, since an SSI approval brings Medicaid automatically in most states while SSDI brings Medicare 24 months after your entitlement date.

Both programs use the same medical definition of disability, so this is not a choice you make, and some people qualify for both at once.
