Some properties come with a century of history already standing in the yard. On this one, the live oaks set the terms, and the fence was designed to sit quietly beneath them.

White painted brick columns and a low brick base carry black powder coated steel panels along the street. From the sidewalk, it reads as a natural part of the house, as if it had always been there. Inside the line, it creates something the property didn't have before: a private backyard, open to the light and the canopy, but set apart from the street.

The two black labs on the last slide have taken over security. They mostly work from the shade.

We posted this one a while back, before the stain went on, and it was already a fence we were happy with. Then the color went on and the entire backyard shifted.

The stain is a deep green grey, which is the quiet trick here. It borrows from what is already growing in the yard, so the fence reads as shadow rather than as a hard edge. Everything planted in front of it comes forward. The hedge gets richer, the greens get greener, and the fence stops being the first thing you notice. It becomes the reason the rest of the yard looks finished.

It is the smallest decision in a fence project and it changes the most, which is why we bring it up early rather than at the end. If you are planning a fence, choose the color while you are still choosing everything else. It is the upgrade people are happiest they made.

Every gate that leaves our shop is designed by architects who believe the detail is the design. The hinge placement, the board spacing, the finish specified to the elevation of the home it serves. That standard does not change.

Some of our favorite work is the kind that never asks for attention. Hand-selected cedar, a true and level run, a cap detail that resolves cleanly at every post. Nothing about this fence is loud. Everything about it is deliberate.

The quiet luxury of a perfect fence line.

Not every project is a fence. This client needed exterior equipment out of sight, and the answer was a custom lattice screen designed to the home: framed panels, a shaped ogee detail at the corners, finished to match the trim. It solves the problem so cleanly that it reads as if it were part of the original architecture. That is the standard, whatever the structure.

Commissioned to conceal. Designed to belong.

The best compliment a court enclosure can receive is that you did not notice it. From the air, this property reads as courts, lake, and lawn. The fencing that makes it all usable recedes by design: black chain link, sized to the site, set to protect the play without interrupting the view. Restraint is a detail too.

The enclosure disappears. The lifestyle doesn't.

Two materials, one intention. The masonry columns belong to the architecture of the home. The cedar shadowbox panels bring the warmth. Designing the two to meet cleanly, at the caps, at the rails, at every joint, is where the real work happens. That is the difference between a fence that sits beside a home and one that belongs to it.

Stone sets the structure. Cedar sets the tone.

There is no reason a gate should be built to a lower standard than the front door. This one was designed with the same care as interior millwork: a diagonal board pattern set in a raised frame, scribed to the roofline above it, finished to match the trim of the home. The hardware was selected, not settled for.
