Tucked away in the southern part of the city, Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center protects more than 100 acres of forest and wetland habitat, with walking paths and boardwalks leading visitors straight into the landscape.

And considering you're still in Louisiana's capital city, it can feel surprisingly wild.

The preserve includes swamp, hardwood forest and other natural areas that provide habitat for birds, turtles, snakes, raccoons and plenty of other Louisiana wildlife.

And yes, alligators can occur in Louisiana wetlands, so this is definitely a place where you pay attention to your surroundings.

But that's part of the experience.

Walk along the boardwalk and suddenly the traffic and development of Baton Rouge seem much farther away.

Cypress and tupelo trees rise around the wetland.

Bird calls come from the woods.

Something splashes in the water.

And immediately everybody starts looking for what made the noise.

The nature center also helps visitors learn about the animals, plants and ecosystems that make Louisiana unique.
