Louisiana Insurance Market Update: Encouraging Signs as We Head into 2026

Thereโ€™s some good news for Louisiana policyholders as we head into 2026 โ€” weโ€™re starting to see real progress in both the auto and homeowners insurance markets.

๐Ÿš— Auto Insurance:
For the first time since 2020, the average approved auto rate filing in Louisiana is a decrease. More insurers are cutting rates than raising them, accident frequency is down, and several major carriers have reduced premiums multiple times this year.

๐Ÿ  Homeowners Insurance:
While homeowners rates remain challenging, the pace of increases has slowed significantly. In 2025, Louisiana saw the lowest average homeowners rate increase since 2020, and some insurers are now filing rate decreases as market conditions stabilize.

๐Ÿ“œ Why this is happening:
The Legislature passed meaningful legal and insurance reforms over the past two years. Some of those reforms are just now taking effect, with more rolling out in 2026 and 2027. Early data shows these changes are helping restore competition and stability in the market.

๐Ÿค Credit where itโ€™s due:
I want to thank Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple for his steady leadership and focus on strengthening Louisianaโ€™s insurance marketplace, as well as Governor Jeff Landry for prioritizing insurance reform and supporting policies that encourage competition and accountability. Progress like this requires teamwork, and their efforts are making a difference.

๐Ÿ’ก What policyholders should do:
As competition returns, shopping your insurance matters more than ever. Rates vary widely by company, and the free market works best when consumers compare options. Talk to an independent agent, review your coverage, and make sure youโ€™re getting the best value for your family.

We still have work to do โ€” but the trend lines are finally moving in the right direction. Iโ€™ll continue fighting for a stronger, more competitive insurance market that protects Louisiana families and rewards responsible behavior.

As we begin to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States of America on July 4, 2026 โ€“ it is important that we look back and honor those who have gone before us.

The White House and Hillsdale College produced a collection of videos celebrating the โ€œStory of Americaโ€ and I want to encourage all to watch, share with your family - especially our children.

The videos are well produced and it reminds us just how great this country is and the stength and courage of those who fought for freedom and liberty.

Thankful for America.

Take a minute to check out some of the bills that become law today - January 1, 2026!

Excited to share that Louisiana is now a comparative fault state as it pertains to personal injury litigation. This common sense measure will help to bring Louisiana in line with more than 34 other states as it pertains to determining fault - if you are found to be 51% or more at fault - you canโ€™t claim for damages.

Here are a few more: (see list in comments to read more about them)
HB 549 - Requires reduction in rates for commercial policyholders if cameras or telematic systems on located on trucks

HB 438- Deals with advertising expenses and prohibits use of certain expenses in setting rates

SB 231- Transparency in medical billing - helps to rule out inflated medical bills

HB 441 -Funding mechanism paid by insurance industry to cover cost of Louisiana Fortified Roof program
