Restoring The Village

06/18/2024

I am unable to attend tonight’s School Board Meeting due to traveling.

Nonetheless, I’m confident that the Board will acknowledge the invaluable talent our District has in the form of Interim Superintendent Adam Smith and will allow him to be a finalist.

EBRPSS staff are NOT receiving the 4% raise they were promised. They are receiving a stipend. There is no sustainability or security for their futures in the recent move made by our school board members.

In other news, school board members have taken steps to ensure job security for our superintendent by beginning the negotiation process for his contract a year early.

Imagine if they approached the 23- 24 SY Budget with the same vigor. Maybe if the budgeting processes began much earlier the staff may have received the raise they were promised. Our school board members have shown us where their priorities lie. Now the question is, what are we going to do about it?

By the way, promises were made, but they were not kept. Making them lies. Staff were promised a raise. That is what they deserve, that is what they need.

Since the school board entered into the contract with HES, we have seen numerous problems, across-the-board. We dealt with this issue at the beginning of the school year and now in the middle of the second semester, we still cannot seem to have the grass cut at certain schools on a consistent basis.

Nevertheless, I made a commitment to serve my community win or lose, and that is exactly what I intend on doing. On the campaign trail, I often said, that I was willing to roll up my sleeves and do the work myself, and that is what I’m committed to doing. Today I teamed up with my dad to cut the grass at Park Elementary School, so our children can continue to enjoy recess and come to a well-manicured school each day.

As I reflect on the last five months of campaigning, I have no regrets. I am grateful for the opportunity to offer myself as a public servant to our children and community. Though my bid to become a member of the school board was unsuccessful, I am proud of the honest campaign I ran and extremely grateful for the love and support extended to me throughout this process.

The fact remains that our school system is in a state of crisis, and this recent election cycle has proven to us there is a war on public education. The question becomes, “what are we going to do about it?”. As for me, I will not be discouraged. I will continue to fight to protect the rights and best interests of all our children throughout our parish. I will continue to show up and speak out against the injustice of misusing and improperly educating our children. I will continue to fight to make transparency and equity a reality in our school system.

Restoring the Village is more than a campaign slogan, but is a mantra for the work that is necessary and I intend for it to be my motivation for the battle that lies ahead. The most important action for us now is to educate ourselves on the issues, politics, and interests that are outside the well-being of our children. Then we must unite and do everything possible to educate others. Finally, we must be a true village and collectively demand better for every child and every employee of our school system.

So let's not place a period, where God has placed a comma. This was not my intended outcome, but it is well. The issues remain and there is a lot of work to do, so let's do it! I look forward to continuing to serve my community and especially our children. Again thanks for everything. The love I have for my community is real and will remain so forever.

With less than a week left before the election, I need your help. More than 1.5 million dollars have been poured into our local school board races by big industries and out-of-state billionaires, who have personal interests that are driven by greed and personal gain. I have not sought or received dollars from these private investors, because I’m not willing to sell out our children. Please consider making a financial contribution today and let's work together to restore our village.

We had a wonderful time tonight! It was great seeing so many familiar faces and greeting new ones. I look forward to Halloween in the Park each year, and it just keeps getting better. Let's continue to create safe spaces for everyone to come together and enjoy one another. Tonight is the perfect example of why the Community School Module will work and why it is needed. This is what community is all about.

Please read and share today's article to learn more about the candidates vying for the District 3 seat on the East Baton Rouge School Board. My intentions are clear, to strengthen local community schools. We will not be able to ensure the success of our students and the professional well-being of all our staff as long as we continue to give away our district and sell out our children.

I’m happy to receive the endorsement of Step Up for Action. Step Up is a name our community has come to know and trust and has proven to have the best interest of our kids is their priority.

I’m proud to receive the endorsement of State Representative Vanessa Caston LaFleur. Representative LaFleur is a member of the House Commerce, Retirement, and Administration on Criminal Justice Committees. She has been a champion for the children and families of our community through her many acts of service. I look forward to working with her as the next School Board Member.

Today I met with powerful people and collectively we made a powerful statement. These are the six individuals running for school board who are not receiving big industry dollars to sell out our children.

We lead a press conference discussing our shared values and exercised our right to early vote together. In the press conference, we committed to working together to foster healthy relationships that will promote transparency, strengthen our community schools, and not allow private/industrial interests to influence our decisions as board members.

For a long time, women and people of color were denied the right to vote. Through advocacy and demonstrations of protest, people from all races and creeds, we overcame that barrier.

In honor of all the warriors of freedom who in some cases lost their lives, families, livelihoods, etc., let’s make a plan to vote.

Early Voting begins today and goes through next Tuesday. Here is a flyer with information about Early Voting locations and hours of operation. I humbly ask for your vote.
