Happy Juneteenth, America!

What is Juneteenth?
Celebrated on June 19th, Juneteenth (combining "June" and "Nineteenth") is also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. It commemorates the end of U.S. slavery in 1865.

Originating in Texas, which became the first state to make it an official holiday in 1979, the tradition spread nationwide as Black Texans migrated. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a holiday by Washington, D.C., and 46 states in the USA.

Conceived by Ben Haith and designed by L.J. Graf, the Juneteenth flag’s elements symbolize the following:
Red, White, and Blue: Affirm that formerly enslaved people and their descendants are Americans.
White Star: Honors Texas, the holiday's birthplace.
Bursting Star: Symbolizes freedom on the horizon.

Today we honor the life and legacy and of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was the drum major of justice, leading the Civil Rights Movement for racial equality and economic justice. Through his work, he demonstrated the tremendous power of faith, love, and determination to seek justice for the oppressed.

His transformative messages continue to guide us toward a more equitable future. As he once said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” That holds true no matter our race, age, gender or background.

This day is also about giving back and continuing the work he started. That’s why many are spending today helping those in need and revitalizing communities across the state.

We have made many strides in our society, but we still have more work to do. I pray we all do our best to keep the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy alive today and every day.

The McKinley Senior High School Alumni Center is a host site. Please share with those who desire a holiday meal on Thanksgiving Day.

1520 Thomas H. Delpit Drive
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Each November, our Dining Room and The River Center are filled with the warmth of gratitude and community as we host our annual Thanksgiving meal for thousands of our neighbors throughout the community.

Volunteers and staff join together to serve a feast of turkey and all the trimmings, reminding our guests that they are part of a family of care and kindness.

In December, we continue the tradition with our beloved Christmas meal, where neighbors are welcomed with holiday cheer, festive music, and the gift of fellowship. For those facing hardship, this meal is more than food—it is a reminder of hope and the true spirit of the season.
