What unsolicited advice have you gotten about your child’s language development? 😅🫶🏼

So maybe your toddler isn’t talking as much as you’d expected. The pediatrician gave you a checklist and it’s “ummm no he’s not really doing that skill yet.” Those thoughts start to creep in.

“Is he going to catch up?

Should I be doing something at home to help him talk?

Is this why his tantrums have been so big lately, because he can’t tell me what he wants?

I talk to him all the time but he doesn’t respond back, is there a deeper reason why he’s not talking more yet?”

And people try to reassure you, but it doesn’t feel very comforting.

“He’s fine, he’s only 2. Just wait and see.”

But you’re like, “So.. you want me to just wait? By 24 months old the average toddler says 300 words (and we want to see at least 50) and he’s only saying a few.”

If you ARE feeling worried, I just want to be the first one to say that I know this process can be tough to navigate. And I believe the antidote to worry isn’t empty reassurance or just waiting to see if he happens to start talking tomorrow— it’s being proactive.

Maybe he catches up quick, maybe it takes him more time. Right now, we don’t know. But what we can do is learn simple strategies and activities on how to boost his vocabulary at home. It’s not scary or complicated, it’s actually super fun. 😅
