This past year we had the honor of getting Gilbert back on the water after years. The day was even more special because he was able to bring his teenage son along as well.

The truth is, we probably don't talk enough about the things we do in our community. We support local youth, nonprofits, veterans, community events, and organizations—not because we're looking for recognition, but because it's simply the right thing to do.

Don't Bypass Gate Safety Features

This week's service call is a perfect example of why automatic gate systems should always be installed by a qualified professional.

A customer called us after their gate stopped working. During our inspection, we found the original installer had bypassed the UL safety devices just to make the operator function. It worked... until the battery died.
When the operator rebooted after power loss, the control board performed its factory safety check, detected the improper wiring, and the gate system would no longer operate.

⚠️ Safety devices aren't optional. They're designed to protect your family, your property, and anyone using your gate.

Installing an automatic gate is far more than mounting an operator and connecting a battery and solar panel. Proper wiring, programming, UL 325 compliance, ASTM standards, and entrapment protection all matter.

☀️ Texas Heat Is One of the Biggest Enemies of Automatic Gate Systems

One of the most common service calls we receive is for automatic gate systems that have stopped working during the Texas summer. While many people think cold weather is hardest on batteries, extreme heat is often even more damaging. High temperatures significantly shorten battery life, and when those batteries fail, your gate can stop working with little warning.

Many customers try replacing the batteries themselves, and honestly, we wish that solved every problem. We would love nothing more than to walk customers through a simple battery replacement over the phone and save them the cost of a service call.

Unfortunately, that's often not the case.

A dead battery is frequently just one symptom of a larger issue. Low battery voltage can mask other problems, and once new batteries are installed, the system may still not operate correctly. That's why proper diagnosis is so important.

On this recent service call, the 6-year-old gate operator did need new batteries, but that wasn't the only problem. We also found the photo eye safety sensor was out of alignment, preventing the gate from operating properly. On top of that, the customer had lost the key to the control box, making maintenance difficult.

After completing the repairs and restoring the system to proper operation, the customer enrolled in our Annual Gate Protection Plan. With routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and priority service, they'll have confidence that their gate is ready when they need it—while reducing the chance of unexpected breakdowns and costly repairs.

Automatic gates are sophisticated machines with batteries, charging systems, safety devices, control boards, limit settings, and moving mechanical components. It takes more than replacing a battery to properly diagnose many issues.

Looks Can Be Deceiving... Even to Some Gate Installers.
We were recently called out to diagnose an automatic gate operator that was only about a year old. At first, it appeared to be a simple battery issue. After a complete system inspection, we found the real problem.

This property has a LiftMaster RSL12UL automatic gate operator. While it may look nearly identical to the RSL24UL, the two systems have very different battery and solar charging requirements.

In this case, the operator had been installed with a 24V solar panel instead of the 12V solar panel required for the RSL12UL. As a result, the battery was never being charged correctly, leading to ongoing performance issues.

This is exactly why proper training and certification matter.

At Butler Contracting, we are proud to be the only American Fence Association (AFA) Certified Automatic Gate Systems Technician company in Bastrop County. Installing an automatic gate is much more than mounting an operator and connecting a few wires. Understanding UL 325 safety standards, manufacturer specifications, solar charging systems, battery management, and proper system design is what separates a professional installation from one that can lead to costly repairs later.
