Weaving through the pathways, side streets and commercial areas of Basalt’s downtown community is a newly-established historical walking tour full of fascinating facts and stories. Stop by the Basalt Chamber of Commerce’s authentic red caboose at the corner of Midland Avenue and Two Rivers Road for visitor information. Begin your tour just steps away by following the bear tracks through town, residential neighborhoods and alleys and across a swinging bridge to discover landmarks of days past. Along the way are plaques and photos that bring to life the rich railway history and western grit and determination that created this unique mountain town. Fryingpan Road, Seven Castles & Ruedi Reservoir
One of the most exquisite 13.5 miles in Colorado is along the sparsely-traveled Frying Pan Road. The Fryingpan Valley’s unique mix of scenic beauty, historic interest and recreational opportunities surprise visitors every year with this accessible but unspoiled area. Beginning at the quaint Basalt Barber Shop at the edge of town, bicycle or motor along the edge of the Gold Medal Fryingpan River aside the monumental Seven Castles red-rock outcroppings, working ranches, expansive open spaces and kaleidoscopic views. As the road begins its dramatic climb, into view appears 997 acres of the magnificent Ruedi Reservoir and Dam.
