It might be a bit grey and rainy this morning, but here at Trinity, the spring has been full of blue skies, birdsong, soft breeze, and golden flowers.

At Trinity, we're blessed with a growing flock of little ones who give life to our services with their energy and warmth. Parents are welcome to walk with their children during the service--in the sanctuary or outside of it. It's a delight for the parish to embrace them--like this Sunday when a newly-toddling-toddler visited some folks in the back pews.

"The Great Spirit gave me a little light; I followed it and more came and it made me all I am.”

So Enmegahbowh, the first Native American to be ordained an Episcopal Priest, described his Christian faith. We commemorate him today.

Born into the Ojibwe nation, and ordained as a deacon in 1852 and a priest in 1867, he served as a missionary and spiritual leader, helping to provide education, medical care, and religious instruction throughout Minnesota. He was a committed peacemaker, and struggled to prevent Ojibwe groups from entering The Dakota War of 1862.

His bishop, Henry Benjamin Whipple, had this to say about Enmegabowh's character, and their friendship: "I have known Enmegahbowh in sunshine and in storm, and he has always been to me a faithful friend and brother. He has been my companion in many of my journeys in the wilderness, and while he is most thoughtful in character, he possesses a vein of fun which, I suppose, he has more often revealed to his bishop than to any other."

Last week, we finished reading The Gospel of John together at our Bible Study, Word With Friends.

One of the moments we discussed was John 20:3-4: "Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first."

This painting by James Tissot captures the moment just before John arrives, with Peter right behind him.

What do you think of the way Tissot composed this painting? Why is the landscape so desolate? Why are the men's bodies in the same position, as if Peter is John's shadow? Why is John's robe white like the light in the tomb, but Peter's looks grey like the landscape?

What else do you notice?

With the help of a flock of plastic lawn flamingos, things are coming together for the Ministry Fair this Sunday!

Join us on the lawn after the service for burgers, brats, and some conversation with our friends about the many ways Trinity's parishioners serve our church family.
