"Gandhi's legacy is a legacy of love, compassion, and sacrifice. In the 1970s, in response to deforestation, women in the women's movement started hugging the tress, saying, ‘You will have to kill us before you cut the trees.’ In 1981 we had a terrible flood, and a four-mile lake was formed because of deforestation, and after that, finally, the women were listened to. Gandhi's Salt March was so imaginative, so inspirational. Unjust laws are meant to be disobeyed, to create a moral order. Dr. King and Mandela used the same philosophy. Gandhi shifted the mind of the world. Environmentalists started to do with forests what Gandhi did with salt. A huge forest satyagraha campaign was started."

"We will need to be in the streets, enacting creative nonviolence resistance, calling for policy reform and legislative shifts—but we also need to be embodying collectivism, willingness to work together, and a disengagement of policing and use-of-force culture: institutionally, with each other, and around the world."

"Indeed the three policy pillars of the neo-liberal age—privatization of the public sphere, deregulation of the corporate sector, and the lowering of income and corporate taxes, paid for with cuts to public spending—are each incompatible with many of the actions we must take to bring our emissions to safe levels. And together these pillars form an ideological wall that has blocked a serious response to climate change for decades."

"I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music."

"Because the world is not at peace, and conduct—individual, group, or mass—that essentially maintains the status quo, or admits only slow change, is not a real commitment to peace. To achieve peace we must be revolutionaries, nonviolent revolutionaries."

"Nonviolence can be taught and it can be learned, thereby taking the next great step in human evolution to the place where 'each shall dwell under his own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid.'"

"We seldom realize, for example, that our most private thoughts and emotions are not actually our own. For we think in terms of languages and images which we did not invent, but which we were given to us by our society."
