The products have been flying off the shelves and flying back in again! David was busy today unwrapping and pricing this parliament of recycled metal owls. Hoo hoo!🦉

When the overloaded trash truck takes a left in front of your store and leaves a smelly trail! 🤮
Happy Monday! 😳

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been having curiosity chats with small-business owners and advocates from across the country and this has been one of the most consistent things I’ve heard.

Small businesses owners are putting tremendous effort into marketing their businesses. They’re showing up online, creating unique experiences, updating their inventory, improving the customer experience and reminding people that they exist. And they receive plenty of positive feedback.

People tell them how much they love the shop and comment on how cute it is. They say the community is lucky to have their business and how sad they would be if it ever closed. Then they barely step inside.

The owners I’ve spoken with don’t only see this happening in their own businesses. They see it happening to the coffee shop down the street, the restaurant next door and the retailer across town. There is a real disconnect between the enjoyment of living in a vibrant community and the responsibility of participating in one.

We all want the charming downtown with unique stores, great restaurants, local coffee shops, beautiful gathering spaces and interesting places to take our friends when they visit. But those places cannot survive on compliments, likes or one purchase during Shop Small Saturday. They need regular customers.

If you want to enjoy a vibrant community, you have to participate in creating it. You have to walk through the doors, spend money locally and make these businesses part of your actual routine. And here’s the catch: it can be as little as $15-20 a month, but imagine if everyone in your community did that - holy cow what an impact that would make. Let’s share the responsibility.

You don’t get the vibrant downtown filled with unique experiences without being part of those experiences. 09/13/2026
