"Can I even drink water before surgery?"

While you often must stop eating solid food 6 to 8 hours before surgery, modern anesthesia guidelines often allow you to drink clear liquids—like water, apple juice, or black coffee—up to two hours before you arrive. However, "clear" is the key word! Anything with milk, cream, or pulp counts as food. Your Nurse Anesthesiologist will give you a strict cut-off time to keep your lungs perfectly safe while you sleep.

"Will anesthesia make me sick to my stomach?"

It is one of the most common questions we hear in the pre-op area! Post-operative nausea is a valid concern, but your Nurse Anesthesiologist has multiple ways to prevent it before it even starts. We review your medical history and use a tailored combination of anti-nausea medications during your surgery to keep your stomach settled. If you are prone to motion sickness or have had nausea after surgery before, just let us know so we can customize your care plan!

"What should I wear on the day of my surgery?"

Keep it simple and comfortable! We highly recommend wearing loose-fitting clothes that are easy to take off and put back on, especially over bandages or a surgical site. Please leave all jewelry, watches, and valuables safely at home. Your Nurse Anesthesiologist and the pre-op team will get you changed into a hospital gown when you arrive, so comfort is the main priority for your ride home!
