We are still expecting between 1-2" for most areas from this system which will help with the current rainfall deficit.

From a wind standpoint few hurricanes reach and maintain this intensity at landfall. is tied with Dorian (2019) and the Labor Day (1935) as the storms with the highest landfall wind speeds. From a lowest landfall pressure standpoint, Melissa and the Labor Day Hurricane hold that title.

BREAKING: has made landfall as a Category 5 with winds of 185 mph and a pressure of 892 and is tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 as the strongest hurricane at landfall. Extremely dangerous winds now moving ashore with the eyewall in western Jamaica.

We are still looking at a much-needed soaking for mid-week. The heaviest rain will occur Wednesday night through Thursday morning where 1-2" will be common. Some areas could get a bit more. This rain is not related to Melissa.

now has winds of 185 MPH and a pressure of 892 mb. This makes it tied for the 3rd strongest Atlantic Hurricane on record with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane.

is around 3 hours from landfall. has gotten even stronger with the official pressure down to 896 mb (extrapolated pressure at 893 mb) which puts it as the 5th all-time strongest Atlantic Hurricanes in terms of pressure.
Winds have increased to 180 mph and it could get even stronger leading up to landfall. Extreme wind damage is expected within the eyewall as it tracks across central and western Jamaica today.

The AF and NOAA Hurricane Hunters don't get enough credit for what they do.
On this morning's mission, the plane made two passes into the eyewall and had to abort the mission because the turbulence was so bad. It had to be REALLY bad for them to do this.
That should give you an idea of how powerful is.

WET WEATHER THIS WEEK: We could see rain chances in our area as early as later Tuesday, but the best chance comes Wednesday night through Thursday with a second stronger storm system.
Forecast models show starting Tuesday evening and ending Friday morning a solid 1-2" across our area. Some spots could see up to 3".

's winds increased to 165 mph overnight making at a Cat 5. The storm has the potential to strengthen even further.
The latest hurricane hunter flight had a dropsonde (an instrument dropped out of the hurricane hunter aircraft to get measurements in the storms) recorded winds at 242 mph at 3,000 ft! That would be record territory for wind measured by a dropsonde.
The eyewall also has shown signs of contracting, or getting smaller in size, further indication of strengthening.
It is an incredibly powerful storm.
