When your best friend makes her great escape (presumably in search of French cuisine) and you finally find her, in the dark, 40 minutes later, shaking in the middle of Roland Ave in front of Petit Louis and then you refuse to let go of her for the next 24 hours. Portrait by

This is a photo of a perfect family in a perfect family portrait because when you have three children living with you part time, and the messiness of your modern family is messier than normal, and somehow you find yourself in your pjs on a perfect fall morning with no one fighting or crying or bleeding or digging a hole in the yard or “decorating” the house with shaving cream, or feeding the dog grapes or leaving the gate open for her to escape, and your Crohn’s disease flare up has given you the weekend off, and you realize that everyone is in a genuinely good mood and being kind to one another, and the dog is still alive, you take a picture to prove that it happened and proceed to post it on social media to tell the world that everything is fine and good and beautiful and perfect and that you love this old house and these precious people and that, henceforth, we plan on wearing pjs for all family portraits.
