On the final day of Women’s History Month, we honor F***y Jackson Coppin, an educator, missionary, and pioneer who dedicated her life to advancing education and opportunity.
Born into slavery in Washington, D.C., Coppin overcame extraordinary obstacles to pursue her education, eventually graduating from Oberlin College. She later became the head principal of the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, where she helped shape the lives and futures of generations of young students.
A passionate advocate for education and empowerment, Coppin expanded educational programs, created opportunities for young women, and worked to ensure that her students could apply their knowledge in meaningful careers.
Later in life, she and her husband, Bishop Levi J. Coppin, carried their mission abroad, serving as missionaries in South Africa.
F***y Jackson Coppin’s legacy as an educator and leader continues to inspire those committed to knowledge, opportunity, and service.
Honored to speak at the ribbon cutting for The Carver House, a powerful example of what happens when education, opportunity, and community align.
Students from 10 Baltimore City high schools, alongside the Requity Foundation, transformed a vacant West Baltimore house into a high-performing home and putting property back to productive use while training our future workforce.
One student said it best: “Requity has been my safe space.” That’s the impact.
As a proud Carver Bear, this one hit home. Grateful to the students, educators, and partners making it happen.
A thriving Baltimore requires investing in young people, strengthening communities and building real pathways to opportunity.
