We're a nonprofit quality assurance organization focused on higher education programs. Our more than 2,200 experts come from industry, academia, and government.
Through our services and global partnerships, we help prepare the next generation of students build a safer, more efficient and sustainable world. We accredit college and university programs in the disciplines of applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor's and master's degree levels. With ABET accreditation, students, employers and the society we serve can be confident that a program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce. We began as the educational standard against which professional engineers in the United States were held for licensure. Today, after more than 80 years, our standards continue to play this fundamental role and have become the basis of quality for over 40 disciplines all over the world. Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, our criteria focus on what students experience and learn. Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance. They give their time and effort supporting quality assurance activities around the world by serving as program evaluators, commissioners, board members and advisors.

Did You Know, ABET Accreditation Supports Flexible Program Models?
As institutions explore three-year and other reduced-credit bachelor’s degrees, some may assume these programs are not eligible for ABET accreditation, but they may be.
ABET’s criteria are intentionally non-prescriptive, allowing institutions flexibility to design programs that reflect their missions and respond to evolving student and workforce needs. For more than two decades, our accreditation process has focused on student outcomes, emphasizing what graduates know and are able to do rather than prescribing a single model for delivering an education.
As institutions consider new degree structures, we encourage them to think holistically about the knowledge, skills and experiences students need to succeed. ABET welcomes the opportunity to work with educators as they continue developing and innovating programs while still meeting the necessary accreditation criteria.

What do your engineering students know about ABET? Deans, department chairs and faculty are invited to share this survey opportunity with undergraduate engineering students and colleagues who teach them.
This IRB-approved, multi-institutional research study examines engineering students’ knowledge, awareness and value of engineering program accreditation, specifically ABET Student Outcomes, and how these outcomes may connect to their future engineering careers.
The survey takes approximately 5–7 minutes to complete. Students who complete the survey will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one a $50 gift card, with approximately 1 in 18 odds of winning.
Participants may also be eligible for a follow-up interview and will receive a $25 gift card upon completion.
