The Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown Three years later the horse would have the 1873 Preakness Stakes named in his honor.

Pimlico Race Course is a racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes. Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers called the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred traine

He was born in Kentucky, but raised and trained at Sagamore Farm making Native Dancer more than just a Pimlico legend, he's a Maryland champion. He won 21 of his 22 starts, including the 1953 Preakness and Belmont Stakes, with his only loss coming in the Kentucky Derby.

He appears in the pedigree of countless champions including Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer, leaving a mark that still echoes throughout the sport.

You can't talk about the legends of Pimlico without mentioning the one that created a new generation of racing fans. In 2015, American Pharoah rolled into Pimlico with the weight of a 37-year drought on his shoulders, and left with the energy of a champion in full command.

He powered through the mud, pulled away with ease, and turned Old Hilltop into the launching pad for a Triple Crown run we’d been waiting decades to see. Did you watch his unforgettable Preakness performance?

In today's Pimlico Legends we highlight a filly who carved her name into Preakness history. In a Preakness unlike any other, Swiss Skydiver delivered a race we’ll never forget. No fans, just a filly with fire, taking on the boys and winning one of the greatest stretch duels in Pimlico history. Even without a crowd, she created a moment that still echoes at Old Hilltop.
