Riot On

This button, now available in Riot On's Etsy store, was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Mean Girls. This isn't a quote from the movie but it was an idea that I got from a line in the movie. I combined that idea with the silly idea that patriarchy is still trying to be a thing. Well, in the feminists world (along with in my world- my mind) patriarchy is not going to happen so stop trying to make it happen.

Feminism is a topic that I think is very fetch, which is why I made this shirt that is screen printed on unisex light pink t shirts. Even though Wednesdays are the day to wear pink, this shirt can be worn all days of the week! You might have to sit with the "art freaks" or "sexually active band geeks" but at least you will be in sitting in style, ready to "rock this bitch". I was also going with the color scheme (light pink and blue) from Le Tigre's album cover for Feminist Sweepstakes.

5 Ways Feminism Improved My Marriage Since my sophomore year in college, feminism has been my source of security, inspiration, courage, and faith. It has provided me with the emotional and intellectual tools that I needed to piece together…

This sticker was influenced by one amazing feminist collective from Russia. Their fierceness and ways they've stood up strong for what they believe in has inspired me to do what I want to do and I hold so much respect for them. I thought it would be cool to make a sticker in celebration of their release and to pretty much sum up what they are fighting for....To be freed like how everybody should be.

This Riot On sticker was influenced by a friend I used to know a while ago, who was always told on Thursday and Sunday nights by her boyfriend 'Sorry Babe, it's poker (or game) night' and would go out all night. We used to hang out on some of those nights she was alone and eventually made it a regular girls night thing on Thursdays. Then one night she was able to use that same line her boyfriend would say except she said "Sorry Babe, but tonight is girls night." and closed the front door and went out doing her thing. I miss her friendship as we went on the best adventures and did some of the best things together. :'(

This fun t shirt design was influenced by a conversation I had with a friend a while back and a popular hip hop show that came on the "music television" back in the 80's. My friend asked me why I spelled "your" like "yr" and I told her because "Kathleen F*cking Hanna spelled it like that!" and we laughed. I explained how it was a commonly used abbreviation in the Riot Grrrl culture that I picked up when I was 19, then said "it's like a Riot Grrrl thing". Out of boredom I started to draw a riot grrrl with a speech bubble coming from her mouth screaming 'YR!'. Immediately I thought of that hip hop show and drew the speech bubble again but adding spikes on the top.

When I created this design I took ideas from my doodle, gave the word "YR!" a "painter brush" look, added little gray hairs / fur effects in the background of the bubble and added "it's a Riot Grrrl thing" on the bottom of the bubble.

This shirt has print on both sides. Front has the "YR!" image and the back has one of many goals this line is trying to achieve. However, since the last print run, I have been working on improving the designs along with revising the company's goals and mission to allow the line to be able to reach out and support all folk that make up this feminist community rather than women only. I'm currently working on finishing the final editing and getting it ready for the next print run. So with that being said I am discontinuing this particular design and after these shirts sell out the new design with new slogan will take its place so please keep an eye out for the new design, coming soon. I'm also looking to add more shirt colors.

This design was created at the start of this new journey. Earlier this year I was playing around with different kind of styles and paint strokes along with trying to pick out a great name and logo for the line. After deciding on the name Riot On, I created a document on the computer that had all the different style logos lined up to try and figure out which style was best. I went around asking everybody to give opinions and thoughts on the 4 styles when it dawned on me..... "HEY I CAN MAKE THIS A T SHIRT DESIGN!" That's the story behind this design that I like to call : The Beginning of Chapter 1 - 'So, whats yr name going to be?'. The biggest, boldest logo is the chosen logo.
