Today is Thursday of the Second Week of Lent. The Roman Martyrology commemorates:
St. Lucius I, Pope and Martyr (d. 254), 22nd elected pope. Except that he was born in Rome, Italy, there is little information on Lucius' birth or younger years before becoming a priest. When elected as pope in June 353, Lucius chose to use his own name. He was quickly banished from Rome for a period, but returned and died in Rome after serving 8 months in office. Even though he was only a pope for such a short period of time, he fought against the heretic Novatian (heresy Novatianism).

St. John Joseph of the Cross, Priest (1654-1734). St. John Joseph was born on the Island of Ischia, off the coast of Naples, Italy. He entered the Alcantarine (after Peter of Alcantara) or strictest branch of the Franciscan Order at the age of 16. After being ordained, over the years he obediently took on assignments of novice master, guardian and provincial, all the while still practicing penance, putting the needs of others first, and choosing the lowliest tasks to serve his community. After suffering a stroke, he died in his convent at Naples on March 5, 1734. He was canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI.

Today's Station Church is St. Mary in Trastevere, rebuilt in the twelfth century. After St. Mary Major, it is considered the most beautiful church dedicated to Our Lady in Rome.
Collect for Thursday of the Second Week of Lent: O God, who delight in innocence and restore it, direct the hearts of your servants to yourself, that, caught up in the fire of your Spirit, we may be found steadfast in faith and effective in works. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

95. "Born of the Virgin Mary"; Why is Mary truly the Mother of God?

Mary is truly the Mother of God because she is the Mother of Jesus (John 2:1, John 19:25). The One who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and became truly her Son is actually the eternal Son of God the Father. He is God himself.

96. What does the "Immaculate Conception" mean?

God freely chose Mary from all eternity to be the Mother of his Son. In order to carry out her mission she herself was conceived immaculate. This means that, thanks to the grace of God and in anticipation of the merits of Jesus Christ, Mary was preserved from original sin from the first instant of her conception.

97. How does Mary cooperate in the divine plan of salvation?

By the grace of God Mary was kept free from every personal sin her whole life long. She is the one who is "full of grace" (Luke 1:28), "the all holy". When the angel announced to her that she would give birth to 'the Son of the Most High" (Luke 1:32), she freely gave her consent with "the obedience of faith" (Romans 1:5). Mary thus gave herself entirely to the person and work of her Son Jesus, espousing wholeheartedly the divine will regarding salvation.

The first Monday of September marks the end of summer every year in the US. It’s also the day workers’ rights advocates pushed to formally recognize the achievement and contributions of American laborers.

The holiday was first celebrated in the early 1880s by individual states before getting its national holiday title in 1894. At the time, Black people in the US were just years separated from slavery, in the throes of the Reconstruction Era, and battling ongoing racial injustice in every aspect of life, especially the labor market. After being enslaved for generations, Black people fought –– and continue the fight –– to earn equal pay, workers’ rights, and more.

One Black figure leading the way was Asa Philip Randolph who, in 1925, began a decade-long crusade leading the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), one of the nation’s first Black labor unions. The organization brought labor union ideals to thousands of Black households, and in 1935, became the first Black-led labor organization certified by the American Federation of Labor as an exclusive collective bargaining agent.

The BSCP had a membership of upwards of 18,000 Black railway workers of the Pullman Company and fought against labor inequality, unfair wages, and poor working conditions carried out by the Pullman Company which had exploited the situation of newly freed Black people in search of employment opportunities.

Randolph was a native of Florida and attended the Cookman Institute, which is present-day Bethune-Cookman University. He also became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and went on to organize the 1941 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom which is credited with inspiring the nonviolent protesting principles of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.
