I posted this yesterday and wanted to share again…. With more detail/context.
My bud Matt Halpern and I have known each other a long time thru music. We’ve got a lot of similar interests and mutual friends, but in the past couple years have been spending more time hanging out (he dove headfirst into BJJ and it affords us to hang while training and exercising..), plus he has an amazing wife and family like mine (Lisa Shealey).
Anyway, Matt is one of the best humans I know and a fav of mine as well. It’s always fun. We always learn and usually we are talking s**t, laughing and searching for awesome food, or getting beaten up by Big Boy Club Grappling (Mike Turpin / Dan Cenidoza / Dan Goddard and crew).
About a year ago we talked about making some songs together… and while I don’t Djent myself, Matt has a deep love for music and wanted to produce some songs with me. I fought back a bit as I’m a massive “fan” of Matt and Periphery and all those guys do.
I’m a simple songwriter that’s constantly learning, but I love making music. Matt said he’d arm bar me and not let go after I tap if I didn’t agree to make some music, so…
How can I say no to that…!??!?
The project we decided to call Him, Not Him and we’ve recorded a bunch of songs. Working with Matt is awesome. All of these tunes are focused on the song (lyrics and melodies) and he drives the direction. We get to work with some friends and people we all love (Drew Mazurek Pete Strobl James Robbins Matt Redenbo Dan Coutant etc.. ) and have friends play on the tracks too.
It’s a fun way to collaborate and make music without expectations or any goals other than making things we like and sharing it with the world.
So, we will be releasing more songs under Him, Not Him and we hope you give it a listen, a follow and share.
While I don’t enjoy social media, I understand the value in using it to share this, so hopefully you check out the link and follow us.
