"I donated my kidney to my little sister this year. This would make her third transplant, and second kidney transplant. When I heard the news about her needing another transplant, I was absolutely heartbroken. I then made the choice to apply as a living donor for her. After many tests and many months later, I was finally approved by the Jackson Memorial Transplant Center in Miami. Her previous surgeries were performed there, so I knew I was in great hands. I wasn’t nervous at all (for myself) leading up to the big day. I was so happy and grateful that I was healthy enough to be approved. It’s been four months since the surgery and I feel great. I wish I had 30 more kidneys to donate. I would do this all over again in a heartbeat. My sister is thriving, still slowly recovering. Her doctors are hopeful of her future and she is getting stronger day by day. I want people to know that being a living organ donor has changed my life, in the most positive way, of course." – Tiffany (left in photo). 💙💚

Paula Slacum has worked in the operating room for nearly 35 years. At the age of 19, she observed her first organ recovery procedure as a surgical tech student. She was so inspired by the positive change she saw in patients after receiving a transplant she decided to start working in the organ donation and transplantation field. Currently, she is a surgical first assistant at Inova Loudoun Hospital.

In fall 2025, Paula learned that one of the surgeons she worked with, Dr. Z., was in renal failure and needed a kidney transplant to survive. Dr. Z explained to Paula that, because of his blood type, it could take him years to get the kidney he so desperately needed. Curious, Paula asked him what his blood type was and he responded B+. Paula remembers being surprised as B+ is a rare blood type and she is also B+.

“My heart raced and I heard God tell me to help him. It was like he was whispering in my ear and putting a hand on my shoulder to encourage me to offer help. We finished our procedure and I gave Dr. Z a hug and said I was hopeful he would get the kidney he needed.”

The next day, Paula messaged Dr. Z to tell him she was also B+ and wanted to help by exploring whether she could donate one of her kidneys to him. He politely declined. A few weeks later, they were working together in the OR and after the procedure, Paula texted him and asked for the link to start the process to see if she could be his donor. This time he accepted and told Paula he was in tears over her gesture.

Paula then began the process to be his living kidney donor, and despite a few setbacks, she was eventually approved for surgery.

So, in March 2026, Paula found herself in the OR—this time as a patient. “It was surreal. Seeing my name on a surgical posting for a Robotic Nephrectomy was intimidating, but it also reassured me that I was healthy enough to donate. I donated my left kidney to one of the most compassionate, caring and deserving surgeons I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I knew I did the right thing for the right person, because God put me in the right place at the right time.”

After three weeks of recovery, Paula went back to normal activities and was able to drive, ride her bike and travel with her husband to Ireland for his birthday! She is so grateful to see the profound impact that the transplant has had on not only on Dr. Z, but the countless lives he continues to touch as a surgeon. Donate Life Virginia
