Just before midnight, Hogan was ahead by about 100,000 votes, according to results from nearly 90 percent of precincts. Many of the outstanding votes were in Democrat-friendly jurisdictions, including Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and the city of Baltimore. But it seemed unlikely that those votes would be enough to push Brown ahead.

Republican Larry Hogan has overtaken Democrat Anthony G. Brown in the race for governor as early returns continue to pour in throughout the state. With a little more than half of the precincts counted at 10:45 p.m., Hogan led Brown 54 to 44 percent in early returns. Libertarian candidate Shawn Quinn had 1.46 percent of the vote.
