This is fordite, one of my favorite pieces of strange automotive history.

Fordite is made from layers of automotive paint that build up around factory paint booths over years of production. Eventually, those layers are removed, cut, shaped and polished, revealing a completely unexpected cross-section of color and pattern.

This piece started out rough, with a little rust on the back and not much indication of what was hiding inside.

Then I started cutting, grinding and refining it, removing material little by little…And then came the polish.

Suddenly the colors deepened, the layers became sharper, and the whole piece changed as it caught the light.

That’s what I love about working with materials like this. You never really know what you’re going to uncover until you start taking them apart.

Apparently, I’ve reached the point in life where a beautiful summer Saturday means heading to the Gem Cutters Guild to turn industrial paint waste into gemstones. 😂

This is Fordite, layers of cured automotive paint that build up during the manufacturing process, then get salvaged, cut, and polished into these completely wild, colorful pieces of material with the 5 designation (station number?) still intact!

So I spent the day cutting Fordite, along with Cadillac Ranch material, and even some garbage truckite. Yes, these are real things. And yes, I am delighted by all of them.
