Preparation songs, part 1
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” (Isaac Watts)

Advent isn’t the only part of the church calendar that highlights and requires waiting.
Holy Saturday (or Middle Saturday) - the day the disciples and friends of Jesus mourned, and feared, and probably battled despair. Their hope was in Jesus, and now he lay unmoving in a tomb. And they did not know what would happen come morning.
We do (!).
But let’s wait with them, remembering what Christ went through in Good Friday, with the hope of celebrating good news, an empty tomb, and new life when the sun rises.

This hymn is full of beautiful words for Holy Week. “Can we find a friend so faithful- who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer!” On Maundy Thursday we remember Jesus’ last meal with his disciples before his arrest. He washed his friends’ feet and served them the bread and wine of God’s rescue, calling it his body and blood. He served the friends who would forsake, deny, betray him just hours later. He knows what it is like feel “weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care.” He knows what it is like to cry out to God in agony, to suffer, even to die. What a friend we have in him- who meets us in our need, and understands.

I do not know how I accidentally apply flashing filters. Nothing was flashing in the making of this story, but alas, there it is.
