Richard Givens was inspired by the Op Art, Pop Art, and psychedelic movements at the end of the 1960s. An untrained artist, he worked as a mechanical draftsman in Baltimore. In his lunch breaks he made small format optical and geometric pencil drawings- hundreds of them for years. Color explosive work like that of inspired Givens to add color to his drawings. So starting in the mid 1970s, he painted almost 200 different works. An underserved artist, he couldn’t find representation in Baltimore and so by the turn of the following decade, stopped painting. Here we are over 40 years later with an explosion of interest in his work and validation

Happy to announce our return to this December to attend Honored to be selected for a curatorial award featuring the paintings of and The stated theme this year is interdependence and the power of collaboration. Givens was an unrecognized artist of color from Baltimore who painted hundreds of geometric abstraction based works on paper in the mid and late 1970s. Chino is a corn farmer and self taught artist of Nahuatl decent, detailing the folklore and traditional rituals and ceremonies disappearing from contemporary life in southwest Mexico.
