In the current issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Tim Barrett gives us his take on Aimee Lee’s new book, As Good as Our Tools, which celebrates eighteen artisans who make the tools, “so the rest of us could make paper.” In the book Lee cautions the field that we are fast losing our pioneer papermaking toolmakers, and sadly, we are mourning the recent passing of Howard Clark, pictured here, in his shop in 1983. In the current “All Blues” issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Don Farnsworth and Max Thill describe their pursuit to recreate Renaissance-era blue handmade paper, cherished by artists like Federico Barocci and Leonardo da Vinci. At Magnolia Paper Studio, for the past ten years, Don and Max have explored numerous ways to color rags and pulp for papermaking, and went so far as to commission the production of heritage wool felts to achieve the hair-marked surface of sixteenth-century blue handmade papers. Their own artwork on the blue papers they made are a testament to their decade-long quest for the perfect drawing paper. Here, Max Thill is forming sheets of indigo-blue linen paper at Magnolia Paper Studio, Oakland, California.

In the current “All Blues” issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, artist and poet emet ezell shares the history of blue paper in seventeenth-century mystical Jewish texts and how they resurrected the practice in an art project to reclaim an abducted synagogue in Latvia. Part of the art installation was their moving work, Map to Disappeared, 2024, 70 x 50 centimeters (27.6 x 19.7 inches), ink on blue handmade paper.
