Human Trafficking Prevention
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness, support survivors, and strengthen collaboration in the fight against human trafficking. Since 2010, this annual observance has focused on educating the public on how to identify and help prevent trafficking.
Quick Facts & Resources
An estimated 27.6 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking.
• 77% forced labor | 23% s*x trafficking
• 57% are men/boys | 43% are women/girls
In Maryland, more than 2,000 cases involving over 3,500 victims have been identified since the National Human Trafficking Hotline began reporting. In 2021, Maryland ranked 13th nationally for trafficking-related reports.
Why Maryland is Impacted
Maryland’s proximity to major metropolitan areas and transportation corridors —including I-95, multiple airports, rail lines, and truck stops—creates increased risk for trafficking activity.
Risk Factors
Traffickers often target individuals experiencing abuse or neglect, homelessness, runaway status, substance use challenges, or unmet basic needs. They use grooming tactics, such as false promises of love, work, or financial security.
