EXHALE, VOLUME 2 IS HERE 📗 Ending the year with the highly anticipated second installment of his Exhale series, we’re revisiting our July 2025 cover story with .whatever. In the interview, the artist and creative director offered a glimpse into what to expect from the new photo volume.

“Volume One is probably 98% film. I shoot more digital now, but the next book will be a mix—still a lot of film, but also some medium format digital.”

The volume spans over 140 pages of black-and-white photography, presented in both a hardcover and a mini book.

Swipe to watch Madera’s newly released performance art piece for the volume, inspired by Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum.

For the Act Up: Unruled Issue, Baltimore’s own John Wells () stands firmly in the vulnerable, radical tradition of rap.

With his prior two EPs, ‘Can we link before the world ends?’ and ‘Life is hard, can we do it together?”, he confronts love, loss, and the weight of the world—unfiltered and unafraid. From the personal toll of the opioid crisis to war, Wells’ lyrics cut deep, blending hauntingly beautiful production with truth-telling that demands to be heard.

In a period where music artists like Bob Vylan and Kehlani have taken hits to their careers for being outspoken, many artists and their teams continue to rationalize remaining silent on issues that appeal to our basic humanity. To the contrary, Wells expressed the importance of having moral clarity in his work and using his voice.

“I feel the need to speak up, but like I said, it’s not like me doing it is necessarily saving people, but it’s contributing to the overall awareness of letting people know what’s going on..  making people aware, [I] feel like it’s necessary because then hopefully something could change… it’s just my reality to say what is on my mind. To be intentional about what I have to say, it matters.”

Last month, NUNAR’s Act Up: Unruled Issue kicked off with a print exhibition and a champagne toast to five years of the magazine.

Hosted at Chela Mitchell Gallery in Union Market, which recently opened Shy Glizzy’s curatorial debut, the evening gathered guests for a night in D.C.’s go-to locale for creatives.

The night kicked off around 4:00 pm, with it-boy yenga on the turntable. Cover stars Malik DOPE and Anna Divinagracia were in attendance, as well as featured artists Father Sokka and Daryle Locko, while LA-based cover star Verde Madera sent energy from across the coast.

The event culminated in a toast honoring five years of coverage of the creative scene led by Editor-in-Chief Damon J. Barnes, followed by remarks from Jeremy Collins, James Arnold, and the cover stars Anna and Malik. Right after, attendees were treated to a world-class, audio-immersive drum performance by Malik DOPE.
