June is Rainbow Book Month™! A nationwide celebration of the authors and writings that reflect the lives and experiences of the le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, genderq***r, q***r, intersex, agender, and asexual community, Rainbow Book Month™ was originally established in the early 1990s by The Publishing Triangle.

At a time when books by and about LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC individuals are under siege, and library workers are facing threats and harassment for serving these communities, Rainbow Book Month™ is more important than ever. An initiative of the American Library Association, Rainbow Book Month™ is coordinated through its Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services and the Rainbow Round Table.

Mark your calendars for our Summer Reading Buddies schedule!

* Gypsum Public Library: 6 sessions | Mondays | June 15-July 20 | 3:30-4:30 p.m.
* Eagle Public Library: 6 sessions | Tuesdays | June 16-July 21 | 3:30-4:30 p.m.
* Avon Public Library: 6 sessions | Wednesdays | June 17-July 22 | 3:30-4:30 p.m.

The Literacy Project partners with the Eagle Valley Library District to pair teens with elementary-age children to nurture a love of reading, build confidence, and foster community connections. In Reading Buddies, middle school and high school students volunteer as "Big Buddies" to mentor "Little Buddies" in grades K-4.

While Big Buddies develop responsibility and leadership skills, Little Buddies gain literacy skills and confidence. Together, they enjoy one-on-one reading time, reading-based games, and group activities — all in a fun and supportive environment.

On Sunday, May 17 at 11am, we are partnering with The Museum at Dinosaur Junction for a Dig Into Reading event featuring 𝐵𝒶𝒸𝓀 𝑜𝓃 𝒯𝓇𝒶𝒸𝓀 - the story of a T-Rex train conductor who realizes he needs glasses. In this whimsical book, Doc Zippy (the horse) helps Trax navigate the process of visiting the optometrist for eye testing and choosing glasses.

Featuring the animal and human characters from the real life dinosaur museum where Angel (the illustrator) volunteers, 𝐵𝒶𝒸𝓀 𝑜𝓃 𝒯𝓇𝒶𝒸𝓀 is an encouraging tale of resilience that kids will enjoy at the event this coming Sunday. We look forward to seeing you there!
