Today’s is an EXTREMELY rare Sony dynamic mic from the 80’s. The F-V300 looks a lot like a C38 or C48, but inside it’s a suspended capsule cardioid mic with a sound that has more in common with a Sennheiser MD409 or 421. In my guitar amp shootout against a bunch of other dynamics, I thought it was closest to the vintage MD408, but with a nicer top end and more bass response. It’s also pretty cute with the “it’s a Sony!” stickers on the front, back, and screen printed on the vinyl box. This one came with the original twist ties on the cable, leading me to believe it was almost never used prior to me getting my hands on it.

This is pretty special. This branded .berlin KM-56 from the very early days (serial number in the 1600’s) came into the studio today. This mic was in long term storage, boxed up in a closet since the 70’s! Every contact and cable end was cleaned, power supply reset to U.S. voltage and scrubbed, tested out with flying colors on voice and acoustic today! It sounds stunning, just needed a bit to warm up. Pretty sure it’s going to be my number one on acoustic from now on.

Happy to all you dynamic lovers out there! I rarely buy brand new, but the new dynamic V1 was too tempting. The design of the mic, the packaging, the subtle logo on the clip, the canvas zip bag, the hyper-clear sound of this mic! Just received mine in the mail and put it up on electric guitar (perfect), vocals (lost to a classic, but vocals are always different, might win with the next one), and the horn of a Leslie yesterday (vocal reamp, perfectly mismatched with a Neumann M49). It’s going to make the rounds on all the usual and unusual spots over the next couple weeks of tracking, I’m looking forward to exploring with it!

Hey friends! Today’s fun comes in the form of a cheap utility mic that I got years and years ago from - their $30 omnidirectional electret condensers cased in a spent shotgun shell came out at a time when there was a bit of a craze in the recording scene for little mics that were barely bigger than the end of the XLR they were plugged into. I like a “smash” mic somewhere near the drums to add some lively crunch and compressed room sound to the kit, usually blended in really low, but you miss it when it’s muted. Since the stage box is right beside the drums riser, I figured I’d slap one of these right into the box, amp it with a preamp, and beat it up with an LA-2A before sending it clipping like hell into the converters. Fun and crunchy! Funchy!

It’s been a while since we’ve done a but this tiny titan (Yamaha MZ 205 Be) came in yesterday and immediately won my heart on snare, beating out the vintage Shure 545 Unidyne III that was doing a great job until now. Yamaha has once again proven that they excel at everything. This is a rare beryllium capsule snare and tom mic that was designed to be compact for use on drums where there’s not room for standard mics (small body, side access XLR jack, heavy brass angle and spin adjustable mic clip 😍). Super clear fast transients from the lightweight capsule, wide open, full sounding body, it just sounds like the snare that’s under it. Bonus points if you can identify the side address condenser which beat out my AKG 451b recently. I haven’t featured that one yet, but it’s another fairly rare and wonderful sounding mic that I recommend for all sorts of recording.
