Think about football season in Texas. The schedule comes out way before kickoff — you know the matchups, the dates, the whole roadmap. That’s what lets you plan instead of scrambling.
Medicare is doing the same thing this year.
Everyone circles October 15 as “the start.” But that’s just the day you can take action. The real 2027 Texas Medicare Advantage and Part D details — costs, benefits, network changes — start dropping in mid‑to‑late September.
That’s weeks earlier.
If you wait until October 15, you’re already behind. But if you start when the real numbers hit, you get time to compare plans across Austin, Round Rock, Georgetown, and the rest of Central Texas without rushing.
So here it is: your schedule just dropped. The real information starts arriving this month.
And since we’re talking football… who are you rolling with this season.
Turning 65 and still working? Don't default to yes, don't default to wait. Here's the 3-step gut check before you make any move.

Something that won't show up on your premium bill but could still affect your care: how much Medicare pays your doctor.
This year's update raised payment rates overall — a bit more for primary care and independent practices — but many specialists and hospital-based practices are actually facing cuts.
Why it matters: when a specialist's Medicare payment drops, some practices respond by capping how many Medicare patients they accept or pushing out appointment wait times. It's not universal, but it's a real ripple effect, especially if you see a specialist regularly — and it's part of why some of those long waits happen behind the scenes.
Have you ever waited way longer than expected to get in with a specialist?

Your coffee shop reprints the same menu every year. Same fonts, same layout, same "seasonal favorites." But the prices crept up. And that syrup you love? Quietly gone.
You'd never notice unless you looked closely.
Medicare's Annual Notice of Change works the same way.
Every fall, your plan mails one. It often looks identical to last year's — same format, same tone, nothing waving a red flag. But underneath, the formulary (what drugs are covered), the network (which doctors are in-network), and your costs can all shift.
The notice rarely shouts "big changes here." That's the problem.
So before you assume "looks the same" means "is the same," open it and actually read it. Ten minutes now beats a surprise at the pharmacy counter in January.
📬 Got yours? Give it a real look this week.
Mark's wife and kids are on his employer plan too — and if he moves to Medicare, they could lose their coverage entirely. This is the part almost nobody thinks about.

Your Medicare.gov account holds your claims, your coverage, and your personal details. It just got harder to break into... and possibly harder for you to get into, too.
New security features have been added to Medicare.gov to help protect your account information. Basically, extra steps to make it harder for anyone but you to get into your account and see your personal Medicare details.
Most people won't notice anything different day to day. But if you've never actually logged into your Medicare.gov account before, or you set it up years ago and haven't touched it since, this is a good nudge to go check it out. Make sure your login still works, your information looks right, and everything's set up the way it should be.
A few extra minutes now beats finding out something's off later.
Do you actually remember your Medicare.gov login off the top of your head, or is it one of those "I'll reset it when I need it" situations?
Meet Mark. He's 65, works for a big company, and thinks his Medicare decision is easy. It's not — and here's why.

Ever open your cable guide and notice a channel you actually watched just... isn't there anymore? That's exactly what's happening with Medicare Part D plans this year.
Cable packages used to come with a lot more channels bundled in. Now a lot of providers have trimmed those bundles down, some channels got dropped, some got moved to separate add-ons. You still have TV. The lineup just looks different than it used to.
The number of standalone Part D plans available has been shrinking. Some insurers are pulling back or consolidating their offerings, which means the lineup you're used to seeing every fall might look thinner this year. You'll still have choices. There just might be fewer of them, and the plan you had last year might not even be on the list anymore.
This is exactly why it matters to actually look at your options this year instead of assuming your old plan (or a similar one) will automatically still be there.
